Title: Advancemame problems
Post by: GMZombie on March 13, 2005, 02:04:18 pm
ok im dealing with a weird one here....if i cant get the windows commandline version of mame running with correct video settings on the games i may just switch to advancemame...i started to do it the other day but everytime i got to the point of adjusting the monitor "testing the low, mid, and high resolutions the video would freeze up and the comp would restart....im using the windows commandline version of advancemame...i kinda want to use advancemame cause ive used it in every other machine but everybody kept saying no you dont need to cause with the avga and the d9200 you can use normal mame and everything will work fine....i still have yet to get everything to my standards....not blaming anybody either but i think advmame is much better IMO....but back to the problem at hand it freezes up everytime so i decided to add the clock into the rc file myself and ran advv/...but when i tried to adjust a resolution the video froze up and restarted toe comp?? im so confused ??? ???

May be your video card.  AdvanceMame and windows aren't always the greatest match.  There aren't as many cards supported I believe.  Same thing happens to me when when I try to run it with an ATI rage 128.

this is from one of the docs:

"The `svgawin' driver is a subset of the Linux SVGALIB library.
This driver is experimental. At present it's only tested on Windows 2000 with a GeForce 2 board. It's supposed to work with GeForge boards, it may not work with all the other boards. "

you would think that they would want to test it with a AVGA card as that is the best arcade video card known to us.

Yes, but I get the impression there is not much concern for how things run in Windows

I notice that also. Seems that more updates for Linux than DOS.
I may have to start looking into installing Linux and play with it. I am still running DOS and no problem at all. Any pointers where I can start loading/installing Linux, I gonna play with it till I get the hang of it before I move over. TIA

thnx whammoed.

Could you tell me what would be some BIG advantage in Linux to pure DOS ? I see a lot of updates being made to Linux port of Advmame and thats the only reason why I might be changing over to linux, and I have read your guide and thats alot of things to do in order to get advmenu/advmame running.

Right now I run purely in DOS.
1. takes 15 seconds to boot to menu
2. I can just shut the power off during menu or game loaded.

Reasons that I should move to Linux
1. Support for USB  (GUN etc..) but none yet AFAIK

If you haven't already tried, just use the ADVMAME DOS binary and run it from a Windows command line. I'm run the DOS version of ADVMAME from a Windows 98 command line with excellent results. My video card is a Trident Blade and my monitor is a 25" standard resolution arcade monitor. I tried the Windows binary a while back and couldn't get it to work (my system seems to like the vbeline driver, but not the svgawin driver).
