How do you wire up a 49 way joystick to an encoder? I ordered the KeyWiz49 from Randy, and I'll be ordering a couple Happs 49 ways, but I have no idea how to connect them. There are a number of prongs jutting out the circuit board of the 49 way, and I don't know how they are attached. Happs wasn't much help, telling me that they couldn't be used with a PC.
Can anyone help me out with this one?

Here's the image from their site...

i forget what the conputer equivalent cable and connector is...i think a power supply lead or something, but from an old power supply.
as for connecting to the keywiz, i think he explains that in detail, porobably just a screw down or solder on thing.

Ask RandyT. It's his product, he should be able to tell you how to use it :) Or he will probably answer here too.

Just look at the documentation sheet when it gets there :)
I actually made a nice diagram showing what goes where. You will need a an old (or new) floppy cable for the connector.
I'll get my "which wires on the floppy ribbon to use" pictures edited shortly.

well, for connecting to the actual 49-way, don't you need an old atx power cable lead?

I missed that line when I first replied.
Anyway, I have the same sticks at the GGG store, and they are a couple bucks cheaper.

ok, just for clarity's sake, does the happs/midway joystick hook up on the joystick side with a floppy cable or what? i don't have one, so i couldn't even begin to guess on that one. anyways, i guess i'll let the knowledgables deal with this one...

if you already have a Midway I-40 adapter do you still need a KeyWiz49 to hook it up to your PC or can it be done with the I-40?

I doubt it uses any standard PC communication (ie, the I-40 by itself won't work), but I have no idea what it actually outputs.
Now, I'm very interested in what the I-40 outputs, and where it goes. Why?
Currently, mame only emulates the 8-way sticks on the blitz and other midway 49-way games. To have the 49-way part working, mame should emulate the I-40 adapter, and to do that properly we need to find out how it communicates (unless a hack is used, of course). The schematics and other info that comes in the game operating manuals aren't clear on what's going on (to me at least).
Do you have any docs on the I-40, besides the normal blitz arcade manuals?
BTW, the Gauntlet games didn't use the I-40, and thus are much more straight forward on emulating the 49-way sticks. I have no idea why the sport game used the I-40, and the gauntlet games didn't.

Heh, IntruderAlert, if you're replying to me, umm... that's in my web site (see my sig). ;)
As mentioned on the page, I'm not sure what's really going on with the I-40.
But you remind me I have to update that gauntlet, etc are now emulated.
