I need an XBOX joystick with a digital and 2 anolog sticks so a friend in a wheelchair with parylyzed hands can play me. mike at elmerhewo@screaminet.com . I've heard it's not easy but I'm sure someone is up to the challenge. $500 is about as high as I can go, but I can provide some up front to finance construction. Additional note, last time I tried to do something of this nature I fried my dreamcast.
-
you know how to make autocad plans?I am not sure what exactly you want here(look wise) but I do usually take on the challange ;D.
Just post some more info(not enough here) on what you want the builder to use(what kind of analog stick, from happ maybe).
Ps.I really never hacked any x-box controller but more info would help anyone with skills here.
you should email Andy Warne at www.ultimarc.com
The dude has serious knowledge and skills so he might be able to pull it off.

My buddy MRNASTY was 1 of the nations top gamers on the Dreamcast. He plays by putting 1 hand on the stick and hits the buttons with the bone where hand meets the wrist. The only sticks available for the xbox have a digital stick but not the right ofr left analog sticks. He needs these for NFL2K3 and Halo. We need a stick that can do everything a regular xbox gamepad can do. The xarcade stick has a simulated analog, but it won't quite do the trick when he goes up against non-handicapped when xbox live arrives.
-
Elmerhewo, I've seen you make this request many times in the past. And I'm really sorry to hear nobody has been able to meet the challenge. But there is still a lot of unanswered questions here, and that may be why nobody has tackled the problem.
If your friend can only use one hand, how will he be able to play games that require two simultanteous analog inputs (like the dual joysticks) as well as press buttons at the same time?
Games like Halo require you to use both the look/aim analog contron along with the movement analog control at the same time to play correctly. I'm sure other games may have similar requirements.
-
Don't know if I can help any, but I did come across this website with a guy who used an Xbox in his Mame cabinet:
http://pages.infinit.net/cradle/hypermoe.htm
HE might be of some help on hacking the controller if needed. Not sure if thats what was slowing the project up.
And about the multiple sticks. Can the tron type joystick be used? Then use the buttons on the top as the triggers. The xbox has so many buttons, I doubt there is a super easy solution to make it functional for the user for all games.
-
I wonder if any of these can be hacked to serve your purpose?

You're right Dave. Halo may be a little tuff. He has touble with simultaneous button/stick moves. He was never able to sync both triggers to shoot free throws on NBA2K. But I would like to get him a stick that does have both analog sticks and a digital so he at least has the opportunity to to try to do what you can do with a gamepad. The guy at quadcontrol is canabolizing a xbox game pad to build a stick or aound $200. Only problem is that his stick is far more fragile than say a massystems stick. I'm gonna raise it to $500 to get the inventive juices going. If needed, I can pay part upfront to finance construction. My buddy mainly plays racing and sports. He was top 5 worldwide on speeddevils on the dc. xbox live is coming, it'd be incredible if he can play. Thanks for the suggestions on the other sticks. We tried 1, but without analog he can't do the menu selection and play calling on NFL2K3.
-
Mike, you will need to give us as much detail as possible about MrNasty's paralysis. From the tips of his fingers all the way to the shoulder joint...how much can/can't he move? For both arms. Without this detailed info, it would be impossible to design an effective control panel for him to use (layout wise).
Another question: If he plays while in a wheel chair then is there a width limit?
Like I said before, there are many questions here, and the best way you could help would be to give as much detail as possible rather than raising the money amount. If its doable, people will want to tackle the problem. If its impossible, nobody will want to try no matter how much you offer.
You may also want to tell us where you are located in case one of the BYOACers are near by.
-
All he needs is a joystick that has all 3 sticks and the buttons like the xbox control pad. He doesn't need anything special. Just 1 main left analog stick buttons with normal spacing an 1 digital and 1 analog stick kinda at the side or above. The main goal is to play nfl2k3 and race. The question is can anyone do analog for the xbox. I've heard it's tricky. The massystems.com superprostick was the perfect size. If someone can do analog we can discuss the button layout. New question. How do you guys do payment and not that i'd question the honesty of anyone on the internet, but how can I be assured I'd get the goods. Thanks
-
Hey Snaaake, Andy says he can build the anolog stick. Can someone elese build the panel? Thanks Mike. Heres Andy's response: I could probably modify the I-PAC chip to interface to a 5K pot type analog stick and also interface to the X-Box.
You would need to make a panel with the joystick, for example one of the Happ Controls analog sticks, I could do the interface. But I don't have any time until about February.
-
I can do the panel...but show me exactly HOW?
AUTOCAD design would be the best way to figure out how..I can do after i see some sort of design.thanks..
Is it gonna be just like how its on the x-box game pads(same layout?)
Also what kind of analog stick we gonna try to make?go to happcontrols and send Andy the picture of the analog stick.
I can only do this if I see how exactly you want this and are these analog any special then regular sticks?(what size hole i gotta cut.mounting wise and stuff.)
Try to get the link from happ and i have no clue what kind of analog sticks are good and bad. :-\
-
How? I have no idea. I'm an AS400 programmer who started out on punch cards. I'm totally ignorant on this kind of thing. Went to happ. Wow! 170 for 1 anolog stick. 2 analog and 1 $15 digital is $355. Materials alone will push $500. This may not be doable. Thanks for the feedback, snaaake and dave. If anyone can make it happen for $500, let me know.
-
Sorry to bump in like this... I've been reading this and kinda thinking out loud....
Since you're willing to spend like $500 for a custom made joystick.... maybe as well... whoever is making it can do it right....
so far, you have not been telling us much about your friend who is in wheel chair....
personally, I don't know anything at all about analog stick... but the least we can do design-wise on the stick is to know how he plays....
does he always sits on wheel chair when he plays ??
or always a sofa ?? or bed ?? etc.... if there's a steady place he sits, maybe we can design it with a particular size so that it can sluggly fits (like to his wheel chair) and not on his legs... (just an example...) or if he plays in bed, then maybe a simple platform so that it curves (or angles) around his body... (or something...)
also, if his arms movements are not as good as normal person... (sorry... no offense to your friend... but I'm just guessing different sinerios...) maybe he might want the joystick to be a step down so that his wrists can hit the button easier... (more convinent for him....) or if he can't use 2 sticks.... then buttons might need to be arranged... or use trigger sticks so that his wrists don't need to hit so many buttons ?!?!
I mean.... these kinds of design issues... we won't be able to guess unless you tell us his "exact" situation....
Although I don't have the knowledge to build this thing, if you let us know the situation, maybe a few of us here can chip in some ideas to help..... (you know.... after seeing 1up's cab.... I KNOW... there are a gang of geniuses around in this forum.....) ;D ;)
so.... if you and your friend don't mind, can you post some details ??
-
Hyiu, you took the words right out of my mouth.
-
I was considering jumping in to help out as well. The Happs price of analog sticks scared me away too. They cost HUNDREDS!
I'd be happy to help if I can but this looks like its going to be one expensive project!
-
Hiyu & Dave. He doesn't have any special needs. He is very adaptable. He used the www.massystems.com superprostick on the dreamcast to play sppeddevils online where at one time he was in the top 10 worldwide. The massystems stick is just an arcade joystick with 8 buttons and a switch that changed the direction stick from digital(8 way) to mock analog. He can use the existing xbox joysticks, see above pics. He can't use the ones with triggers on the sticks themselves. The the standard xbox had controller has a digital 8 way direction pad and a left and right analog sticks, The above joysticks do not. Some games like nfl2k3 require the analog stick for menus and play calling. Golf games require the analog stick. All he basically need is a mirror of the xbox gamepad put into a joystick. He not only adapts, nbut he kicks my butt in NFL2K. I own him in basketball though. If anyne can figure out how to do it we can discuss optimum dimensions, that's the least of my worries. He currently uses that little stick in the top pic for games that it supports. The problem is does anyone know how to map to an xbox and price. I'm not sure it's doable. I love the guy like a brother but if the price of a joystick is above $500, I think I'll just get him a hooker instead.

Damn! I wish you were my friend! ;D
-
I give the guy who takes care of him a nite off every week. He insists on paying me $100 a month. I don't need the cash so I try to return to him by spending it it on entertainment. Xbox live comes out friday. We can use the xbox $30 arcade stick to play NFL2K3 online against others. With the digital stick he can play as my running back. He just is unable to call plays or work the game menus. Madden's a little more digital friendly but we hate those guys at EA. Oh well, if anyone comes up with ideas for an affordable analog stick let me know.
-
I see.... so the main thing you need is to hack the analog stick to a arcade style analog stick..... (and probably the analog buttons if we're talking about driving games or so...)
hmmm..... that's out of my league for now.....
sorry... but I'll keep looking around.....
-
Hi Guys, I was just thinking(uh oh). The right analog stick is little used. We could get by with 1 digital and 1 analog. (or maybe a switch to swithch between right and left analogs). It might be affordable. Hey Dunk. How'd you post those pics of the other sticks. tell me how and I'll post a pic of the stick we had built for the dc, and our design for the new stick.
-
Has anyone considered contacting Happs to see if they are willing to donate the expensive analog stick? I am sure if you explain its for a special needs person, and provide a link to this discussion, you may be surprized!
-
That's ok GS25. Money's not the problem. DaveK is working on putting together a solution. I was just jokin, though a hooker might be a nice xmas present, that for over $500 it'd better have breasts and tell me I'm da Man!
-
sometomes analog sticks can be found on ebay for a little less.......
-
i have a really good idea for the actual analoas for someone who needs it to move freely hehehe message me and ill share
-
I just emailed you a fairly long explanation of my idea. :)
-
Don't know if this will actually work....
but saw this on the other topic of this board and think this is related....
a arcade size ps2 stick.... (which sounds like could be hacked easily.....) now.... with some modifications on the handle, and a ps2 -> xbox converter....
maybe... just maybe your friend can have an analog xbox stick.......
http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=3750
hope it helps....
happy holidays everyone....
;) ;D
ps: something COMPLETELY unrelated....
I finally ordered a scanner and its coming before Christmas....
(yes... I'm treating myself a Christmas gift....)
after it came and its hooked up, I FINALLY will scan the street fighter bezel that I have and let you guys have it....
(that thing is not in perfect shape...) but someone asked for it before... and I promised I'll do it when I get to it.... its like months late already.... but its coming.......... soon.....
;)
-
Yeah I think that's the one I requested. Thanx man. Thyanx.
-See Ya!!!

Heh, glad you like it. ;D I've been thinking about making this hack for awhile now for my PS2 cabinet. I could hack them to an xbox controller no problem. I think I'll email elmerhewo to see if he's still interested.
-
hey as far as the how to pay for it issue go with paypal and you can pay like $2 more to insure yourself. not that i think anyone would rip you off but better safe.
-
Hey there,
I might be able to help out with the cost on those Happs parts.
My company spends soo much $$ with Happs, they give us a pretty deep discount on parts.
Contact me and I can give you some quotes on those parts!
-
Hi there, to try to help me I post my thread here because someone might have the sollution for me: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=25710
Thanks.

btw, does anyone here know what the pot range is for a true xbox controller?
There is also Daves AKI board that works with 100k and 5k analog joysticks + 14 buttons -> USB. This could work with a usb->xbox interface.
The best solution will probably be hacking an xbox (so you don't have to worry about buying parts your not sure if they will work). But you would have to find the pot range on the xbox's themself.
If they are 5k your set (but thats not likely). If its 100k you would have to replace the pots. These are about 30bucks each... So 60 bucks for 2 pots.
As for the joystick. Does your friend want a flight stick or a ball stick? Depending on his handycap, one might work better for him then others. You can often find them on ebay for 20-40 bucks... And with a new set of pots they will be good condition. The used ones I've bought needed some cleanup on the buttons though... But at $500 you are talking about being able to put a new one in and still coming in on budget.
So what I would do.
Premade box - 50 bucks I believe
XBox controller - 20 bucks
Happs flight stick - 200 new (100k pot version)
Happs Comp - 10bucks
10 buttons - 20 bucks
300 bucks with all new parts...
just takes hacking an xbox... and that is where I suck
-
anyone concidered just using a 49 way joystick instead of an analog...may work OK for the job and they are much cheaper
-
umm did you guys realize this post is over 2 years old? might want to contact him see if he ever got this done
-
I did, but I didn't get any response.
