Title: Will this work for Marquee Backlight?
Post by: isugoat on November 04, 2002, 12:35:21 pm
Due to the modding craze, cold cathode lights are pretty widely available and not too expensive.
So, has anyone tried to use these for backlights?
i would think they'd be ideal because they don't put out much heat and you can plug them right in to your computers power supply so they turn on with your comp.

It's like a neon tube, usually blue, red, green, etc, except very low heat and lower power- usually an inverter turns your 12vdc power supply into ~200vac/~5milliamp so it doesnt need an external power source

I haven't seen white bulbs- they may exist and just aren't as widespread because who wants boring white light to mod your pc?

Im planning on using a red one and rig it to an interlock switch so that when I open the coin door it clicks on, bathing the interior in brihgt red light, plus I should be able to rig the inverter to power my LCD backlight as well

I would recommend just using a small flourescent fixture.  These come with standard 12 or 14 inch flourescent tubes and the complete piece sells for about $7.99 at Home Depot.

You really can't beat that ! ! !

Works great.

i know what kind of light those are...they should work perfect as long your marque is bright enough(if your marque is custom).

But again you cant really beat that 7.99 deal from home depot(those light work great too).

here...skip by the floppy cables (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=cold+cathode)

didn't know the fluorescents were so cheap though, guess i'll go with those and maybe make an on off switch.
