My collection might be a lot smaller now, but they are all like "OH MY GOD" items.

I would never get a rommmate if I didn't personally know them. Just seems weird to me to pick a stranger from a website to live in your house...

that all depends if that roommate is the opposite sex. You can surely study together and really find out what MATE really means in a ROOM alone ;D

... I am a Christian and a church member and thus there are a few specific things that I will not be able to accept in a potential roommate, drug use and overnight stays from girlfriends or boyfriends.

Going out and prosletyzing to people and telling them they're going to hell, THAT'S a "bible-thumper".
Those are just things paige won't put up with in a roommate. Think of it as his version of your "I can't accept you washing your underwear in the dishwasher or you putting the moves on my girl when I'm not around if you're going to be my roommate".
Maybe he can accept a smoker, but not a smoker of the ganja, or a diabetic, but not a guy who needs his "shot".
There's just some things you aren't willing to tolerate, and those are some of his.

Yes, it isn't about telling other people what to do, it is about behavior that is going to have a negative effect on me.
Drug use often comes with a whole passle of problems and most of the even casual drug users I know have lives that are a mess. So drug use is a no no in my house.
Hearing you bang your S/O every night is just going to make me bitter, jealous, and make me regret the decisions I have made in the past.
Basically in my description I came up with the 3 things that I know from experience would make for a bad roommate for me, and I specifically mentioned them.
Smokers are fine, I myself have struggled with smoking on and off my entire adult life. Drinking is no problem.

Topicwise, no, I have no experience with roommates.com.

Well I went ahead and paid the $20, so I guess I will find out for myself. I just like the idea of being able to prescreen people a bit without having to talk to every yahoo that would call about a newspaper ad. At least on the web I can request a picture and such and I won't have people calling and waking me up all day (I hate the phone anyway).

I've got no problem with tub-sleeping, and few people would if they were gamers and your collection really is mostly "OH MY GOD!" items.

Well, I messaged 40 people on roommates.com and I got one response (so far) which was a Nigerian scammer. At least I assume they were, the picture of the person (semi-hot mexican girl) totally did not mix with their supposed career (lots of cheap looking 27 year old mexican girls work as oil field and gas industry consultants.
Her response to my quick message of "I read your profile and you seem ok, check mine and see if you would be interested" garned this response.

The nigerian scammers are updating a bit, but this one is still obvious, especially because she managed to answer my question about her location before her account was removed (still in Florida and quite ready to pay in advance, oops, made the cashiers check out for too much, can you just send me back the balance via western union, yes I am actually in Africa on business this week, but will be back to the states in a few more weeks).

That's a new twist on the Nigerian scam that I hadn't heard yet. But yes, pretty transparent.

Well, I am interviewing a guy tommorrow who answered my craigslist ad, and he seemed promising on the phone (single, similar beliefs, also works middle of the night like I do), and I got a response off roommates.com from a soldier just back from Iraq who will be coming to check out the place if it is still available next week when he gets back.

Believe it or not, I actually used that site to find my previous roommate. Probably the best guy I ever met. We shared an apartment for about a year, then I got stationed in Europe. If I hadnt gotten orders, we'd probably still be living in the same place.
We became best friends, but I guess its all a crap shoot. My suggestion is to wait about a week after you find someone interested. Interview the potentials, go to their work, see how they live, and then make your determiniation. You dont want someone who's to different, and you dont want someone that's exactly like you.

Well, I am officially giving roommates.com a thumbs down and the free ads on craigslist a thumbs up.
After one week on roommates.com I emailed like 50 people and got one real response and one Nigerian scam response. This cost me $20.
My free ad on craigslist got me 2 real responses and one Nigerian scam response, and they all came the next day.
