Title: Shooting gallery
Post by: hatrick on March 08, 2005, 06:23:15 pm
ok...this might be an odd idea for the home...
Anyway, at many carnivals and some arcades and the Bass Pro Shop, there are these coin op shooting galleries where you pick up a gun and shoot at little targets, usually in an old western setting. The targets are on props that do things when you hit them, like ring a bell if you "hit" the bell, or make a can fall over if you "hit" it, etc. It doesn't use projectiles, so I assume it uses IR or laser light or something.
I think it would be great to have 5 or 6 targets scattered around my game room that I could shoot at with a smilar setup.
Where would I begin? What might I look under on Ebay for parts? How could I scratch build a gun and target sensors?
Any info on this would be appreciated.
I love to target shoot, but I don't want holes in my walls  ;D

This might get more exposure in the arcade Misc forum.
Can it be moved there?

Should I repost there?

Thanks.

Look for cheap Laser Tag setups... they should have everything you need, already in convenient gun form.

Building from scratch shouldn't be difficult, with some electronics knowledge; all it is is a matter of a focussed light beam and photoresistors on the targets, and a circuit to recognize the resistance change when the photoresistor is hit to activate the score or animation.

A circuit like this will work well for the detection of shots.

Thanks for the suggestions. I happen to have a couple 555 chips at home (left over from a flight sim toggle botton to keyboard hack circuit), so maybe I'll try to make that circuit.

Laser tag may be a good option as well.   ;D
