what is expected or do you think should be in mame 1.0?
-
I'm hoping the devs will go thru all the older drivers and try to fix some of the emulation problems. To me, that would be better than adding the latest games.

I never even thought about it, but we're starting to get close.
Well, I for one will be severly disappointed if it's just 'another' release. There better be fireworks or something!
I'm running .55 right now anyway, so I guess I really don't care that much. :) But I think it's a good question. It seems like crossing the line to 1.0 should be significant.

A working Space Lords ;D

For the last time, there can be a MAME 0.100. MAME 1.0 does not have to come immediately after MAME 0.99. This has been discussed so many times it makes my brain hurt.

Wouldn't 0.991 be more logical?
-
The first version was MAME 0.1, after MAME 0.9 they went to MAME 0.10. Therefore it is only logical that after MAME 0.99 they go to MAME 0.100.

So we may have to wait until we see MAME 0.999 (possibly another 900+ releases) before we get to MAME 1.0

Ah.
I guess from that standpoint it does make more sense.

Well that puts a wet towel onto this thread
:police: Let's move along people. Nothing to see here, nothing to see...
Or they could just go to MAME 0.1000
The point is, the devs don't have to go to 1.0 until they want to.
-
There will probably never be a complete mame, not as long as each release adds more half broken games and breaks previously working ones.
The only way you are ever going to get a complete mame is if someone does a fork mame, and forks off an older version and fixes everything broken in it and then removes the games they can't fix.

A cocktail mode fix for all the Atari (and some other) vector games. There hasn't been an emulator yet that flips the screen and switches controls for Asteroids/AstDelux/Tempest/TacScan etc.
Having to contrantly switch seats playing a 2 player game makes me sad.
Looks like something might be done about it soon though (fingers crossed).

Funniest thing about this is that I once saw an Asteroids cocktail at an auction converted to Mame, but it only had vector games. So ironic, I wonder how long it took the builder to figure it out and decide to ditch the thing?

btw...
the v.100 is a unix standard.
but with the v.93u2000 I think we should start adding fun stuff myself.
u1337 whenever a new full system is emulated
u80085 whenever a bunch of new majang (sp?) games are added
I'm sure there could be a 100 more.
but don't expect there to ever be a 1.0 version of mame.. We would be talking a long long long time from now. Look at all the cool new items added on older games.
The only way I could see this happening is internal politics (but they seem to shy awya from that), bad bad legal problems (shouldn't happen) or another mulitple emulator comes out that is easier to work with that gets all the emulators interest.

If Dave Foley ends up killing Mame development ( :'(), then there might be a 1.0

- Network support for games that supported linkup of multiple machines in the arcade, such as Suzuka 8 Hours, OutRunners, Virtua Striker, etc. Not talking about that Kaleira-crap either. Just network the games that had a linkup mode in the arcade.
- In addition to or instead of a network mode allow multiple instances of MAME to run on a single system. Coupled with muli-head output you could emulate a linked system.
- Support for cocktail-mode in all games that miss them at the moment.
- Support for multiple physical monitors instead of rendering both screens to the same display. This would allow for accurate setups of Darius, Nintendo VS and Sega MegaTech.
- Support for control-method plugins. Currently things like rotary joysticks are mapped to joystick + dial. This is stupid as it only facilitates keyboard usage and makes hooking up a real LS-30 impossible without extra hardware. The plugins themselves are hardware dependant and should be seperate from the MAME core. This means you could have joystick plugin for a standard US/AT keyboard, but also for Asian keyboard layouts, multiple mice, multiple steering wheel, etc.
- Support for switching resolutions in-game. This is needed for proper emulation of ST-V and System 11/12 based games. Currently every driver is locked to a single resolution.
- Support for tweaked modes. MAME should default to output video with the same Hsync and Vsync timings the original games had and not default to VGA output as it is not accurate.
- Introduction of a warning that reads: "This game is being displayed inaccurate. This game requires a 15kHz display mode". This will alert clueless Windows and TV-out users to the fact they are not viewing the action in a way the orginal was. This same applies to users who lock the refresh rate to 60Hz.

I wish they would fix the racing games.

Maybe not entirely off-topic, given the nature of Mr.Foley's actions, but for some reason Peale, out of the corner of my eye, your avatar looks like a lollipop is being stuck in a llama's butthole?!
My MAME 1.0 Wishes:

Hmmm, how about removal of idiot messages about cocktail modes in DRIVING games and other games that never had a cocktail mode in the first place (cough, Sega Turbo, cough).
Do the dip switches work in Star Wars or Empire yet?
I would also support the removal of all bootleg games, If Mame isn't about piracy then WHY are the bootleg games supported? There is no way to own a legal copy of a bootleg game.
I would also like to see Pac-Man as the parent and Puckman as the clone. It is not relevant that Puckman came first, in all other games the final revision of the game is considered the parent and the earlier revisions are clones.
Not in Mame's current scope, but I would really like to see NES, SNES, Genesis, and Master System support in MAME itself. It is capable of it (emulates offshoots of all those platforms perfectly). Mess is a freaking MESS, I want this stuff in MAME, no other emulator is as good and useable as mame, I see no reason why console functionality can't be added.
-

Is it necessary? For example, my Crystal Castles can be configured completely through the operator menu (settings are saved even when the game is unplugged). Star Wars is from the same era, so I assume it would work the same way. (Does MAME not save those settings?)

My Wishlist....
Have a freeze on new rom additions for a set period, and use that time to perfect the current drivers.
Removal of all Mahjong games...if necessary, for the 2 people in the world that play them, create a MahjongMame distro.
Remove all Bootleg games, with the exception of games where a bootleg is needed to play, due to original encryption not yet removed etc.
Option to remove ALL warning messages...screen flipping, known problems etc.
Have a more flexible and easier to configure method of mapping all controls...
-

tsk tsk.
MAME is about documenting and cataloging the inner workings of as many arcade machines as possible. Since bootlegs exist, they'd kind of exist in the documentation project.
It's not about playing games. I love MAME for the documentation aspect... i mean... ;D

If you don't want Mahjong games, then just remove them yourself. Same goes for 'bootlegs'.
The warning messages are there for legal purposes and will always be a part of Mame- they're in there for our own good. Warnings about inacurate emulation etc. can be turned off if you don't want them (though if it's going to be v1.0final all of these would be ironed out).
What exactly do you find so troublesome with the current control mapping?

Says a few lines in a text file, the developers personal web pages and messages tell a much different story.
The problem is that there was no way to legally have even developed that bootleg support. The same goes for a few one off machines that the mame devs could not have possibly had in their possesion, which means the development was done using rom files they did not have the legal rights to use.
I personally don't care about the ethics of the issue, just the internal inconsistencies. Mame does not support illegal rom use, yet was developed via illegal rom use.

Yep..I've configured my frontend to hide those types of games...just expressing my opinion...
As for the controls...I didn't find anything so troublesome...I would just prefer a more visual method of setting up the controls. Setting up Analog control sensitivites can be a little hit and miss with the current method...but that's just my experience...

How about this.
-
This might make Peal unhappy in that the system requirements for pacman might include a $500 video card.
I assume you mean me, but how'd I get dragged into this?

ok.....a few months in....andnow that we know it will be called .100 , any last requests/ideas/suggestions for the big triple digit version?
-
It's just going to be a regular old release...
-
Maybe they'll surprise us and let Marble Man out of the cage. :)
-
1.Laserdisc support, even if the devs still can't decide on a codec. The hardware emulation portion should still be of importance, and let the derivative builds handle the video codec issue in the meantime. Porting the code from Daphne(if it's up to MAME standards) should not be an issue.
2.Sample support that can handle start and stop points (ie. Journey)
3.Higher standards for artwork support, and a more updated downloads sections on mame.net
4.TurboSub(and eventually Bouncer) emulation improvement.
-
1.0 will have the virtual reality games, which were released in 2055.
(Think about it for a sec...)
;D

When MAME hits 1.0, some of us will be 6 feet under :P

Star Wars Trilogy!

Agree on the PacMan/Puckman point and Laser Disc Emulation.
SWT is in MAME now (unless I missed the sublety, again).
I'd like to see SirP's artwork fill edges added in an official build like Aaron Giles promised me around the 0.62 timeframe. Also an option to disabled "Rom such and such is best known" and screen flipping is not supported" in an official build.
-
I'd love to see no more roms added in .100 and a freeze put in place as well. I've said that for over 2 years. As the project goes, its all about catalogs and correctness. I beleive whats in there should be fixed or atleast attempted to be fixed rather than patch job and move along. I much prefer quality over quantity.
-
I'd like to see a version of Mame that stops before CHD games and everything works perfectly, never to be messed with again.

not ALL new games are CHD though, so you couldn't have "every" game before CHD because there were still games released after the first CHD game that did not require a CHD image.... so MAME and MAMEchd would both have to continue to be updated.

IMO, 1.# should be very different than 0.# mame, more than just game xxx in emulated or feature yyy is added.
One or more of the below:- Stable mame core that doesn't need to be changed much,
- Mame enters a very slow developement period, with most systems and bugs addressed reasonably,
- All arcade games emulated ::),
- Another emu arrives that's better at documenting the hardware, so mame shifts to playablity,
- "kiddies" and "ha)(oRz" take over :(, or
- Mame stops developing :'(
I think the first two are possible (but not likely) in the next five-ten years, but the last two are more likely.
Actually, I think 1.x might come around for another reason: no reason at all. If this is "reason", I hope the numbering will jump to something like 13 (just to mess with people), and start with #.1, not #.0, since it's the first of a no-reason major version number jump. ;D
0.100 is just going to be just another version.

NIVO, mame tried freezes and it didn't work very well after a while. I'm talking about the freezes in the 0.33 to 0.36 "public betas" for the "release canidates". Less people contributed what they had during the freezes (remember it's all voluntary), bugs just sat there with no one both able and motivated to fix them, and the complaints increased, developers and users alike.
In theory it's easy to say freeze adding roms and only work on bug fixes, but in practice in volutary projects, it's a pain. They can be productive if done correctly, but it's not easy to do.
And have you looked at the whatsnew's? Way more bug fixes than added games, especially the 'u' versions now a days.
-
why of course i've read the whatsnew, i read them all when they come down the pipe. Meh, it all went downhill after I turned 21 anyways ;D Game On! Time to get lost in some 80's music 8)

Star Wars Trilogy!
Already in, and even working now. Just very, VERY slow, and with no music, due to (IIRC) the MPEG patent.
