Title: Can we get a EZBoard temp message board?
Post by: Lilwolf on November 01, 2002, 11:24:27 am
Might be worth just creating one for a week and point to that instead.  20% uptime is bad... drugs are bad... never mind

Also... PlanetJay, your email address on the front page in incorrect.

I vote no for an EZboard message board.  It is a free country so you can set one up yourself if you feel so inclined.

The front page of arcadecontrols.com tells you whats going on.

It's nothing major, a little patience is all that's needed.

what mean you? I'm having trouble understanding in context what you mean?  Specifically the 1 week timeframe... I'd gladly setup some temporary digs on my server if I understood what's going on... even use yapbbse... or even use the dumps for this board if avail. *shrug*

I'm talking about setting one up for a week until the this message board gets fixed.

Its going up and down constantly, plus seems to have some speed limiting it or something.  (ie, slow and have to refresh 2 or 3 times).

just a suggestion for something quick for the next few days until the 'changes' happen

Ok... was just curious as you seemed to have the inside scoop on the goings on, especially with the time frame...

I'd gladly temporarily host a surrogate byoac msg board or copy of this one up to 10gigs bandwith (how much DOES just arcadecontrols.ORG use a month anyways...)

Offers on the table for a byoac msg board methodone =P say http://byoac.randomdrivel.com or the like (not configged at the moment, btw).  Just would like to hear from one of the admins if they'd actually be interested as a stop gap measure.

Addicted to the site a little bit, Lilwolf? ;)

If it gets too bad we could always start up a wwwboard on arcadecontrols.com again. For the time being, however, we'll probably just wait it out.

If you ask me, the old message board was much, much better.

The original board was more user-friendly, and not bloated with useless bells and whistles. Read messages were highlighted(which by itself saved a lot of time). Posts would open in a separate window(which was a big convenience). You could see who posted what in the entire thread without having to click and wait for the page to download(and then have to scroll down). You didn't have to scroll side to side in order to read a post(which is a real pain). You could tell how old a thread/post was at a glance. You didn't have to log in(which by itself is such a problem that I stopped posting like I used to).

On that note, since I didn't remember my password, I had to register again.(Which was a wasted half hour). Now what genius would create a message board where if you can't remember your password and/or username, you have to open up a whole new e-mail account before you can register again, because the original account you registered with is considered "taken" by the system?(That goes for the username also). What is so difficult about e-mailing one's forgotten username and/or password to the e-mail address that was used to register with in the first place?

Basically, you have to get a new username, password, and use a probably a hotmail account if you ever want to post here again, since the e-mail you originally registered with can no longer work here. Duh... It makes me wonder how many guys no longer post here because of this.

or...

you could click the "Forgot password" link on the login page.  That did the trick for me.

I am not sure what all the fuss is about.

I have only experienced three outages.  I clicked refresh each time and everything was fine.

I am usually in here five days a week.

I like this forum software.  People don't post because they don't like the forum software...  Duh...  ;) ;D  Don't resist progress.  :'( :-*

Another cool way to get your old username and password back is to email the site adminstrator.

By the way, since you posted it for everyone to see, you may want to change your password: 1PvwiNdD9L

btw, the trouble is in the router on the server, not the software.

I haven't been able to post messages after hitting refresh 10 times... Then somehow I lost my message.  I don't want to write anything other then a sentence long until I hear it's fixed.

but somedays its good, somedays it sucks.  I think a large ISP lost one of two routers and now they are running at 1/2 capacity... but that just a guess.

Not worth moving now of course.  Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

1) I don't agree that people don't post because they don't like the forum software. I do know that there seems to have been an increase in technical problems since this forum came into operation.(I wouldn't call that progress either).

2) Ummm. This forum does have a "Forgot your password " link. This  exists so one doesn't have to e-mail the "site adminstrator".(At least that is the way it is suppose to be).

3) Thanks about the password heads-up... Hmmm. After another wasted half an hour, I can't find a way to change the password either.

I reiterate. The old message board was much, much better.

Regarding passwords, the board doesn't like firewalls, especially ZoneAlarm 3.0 which I use.  I don't know if that's the problem, but it might be.

Regarding the old board, I think everyone tends to exaggerate the current problems and "wax poetic" about "the good old days".

I have occasionally not been able to log in to this board and I have sometimes lost messages that I was posting.  And I already mentioned the firewall problem.

I liked the way that I could see all replies to a thread in the old board and know which ones I had already read and which were new.

OTOH, I remember countless times that I would post a reply and it would appear on the board in some totally unrelated thread.

Also, I like that I can reply to previous comments in the same thread with the new software.  (without having to copy and paste everything).  With the old board it was hard to tell whether I was replying to the last post or the one two posts before.

Finally, I like that the new board moves recent replies to the top of 'The Stack'.  There were times that I would post on the other board and not see half the replies b/c my post was now 3 pages down.  And when you found someone else's reply 3 pages down, you didn't know if they were still following it, so you didn't know whether to answer there or make a new post saying "Joe Smith asked this on page 5 of the board now, and I just read it and know the answer!"

Bottom line is there were advantages both ways and you won't find one software that everyone will agree on.
