I've been playing Tekken 5 to death on my cab since it has come out for the ps2. I played it a bunch in the arcade too. So far, I've really enjoyed it. Great graphics, good stages, decent music and a good character selection. I think it is the best tekken yet...even though they did not really change much. However, the fighting is much more fun than 4 ever was.
I only have 2 gripes:
- Jinpachi (the nonplayable end boss) is really annoying.
- I wish you could create multiple profiles that would track statistics (win/loss, character usage ect...). I wish each one of my friends and I could have a profile.
The characters I've been using are Nina and Asuka. I am probably best with Nina.
Has anyone else played this on their cab? What do you guys think? Is it a nice addition to the fighting game library or just another Namco rehash? The arcade versions of Tekken 1-3 are included w/ 5. 2 and 3 are actually still quite fun, holding up very well. However, 1 is too much of an eyesore to play.

Man I remember playing the first tekken with my brother on a blockbuster rented PS2. What fun that was learning all of Nina's grappeling combo's LOL!!
I lost my tekken 2 PSX CD, but still have tekken 3 just out of nostalgia (we used to play it at work in my first hacked cab back in 1999!). But with all the cheezy unblockable combo's it got old really quick. Plus Soul Calibur came out around that time, and we just never looked back at the Tekken series. Shame. I'll probably pick up Tekken 5 when it hits the bargin/resale bins in a year or two.

Real warriors dont play anything 3rd ;)

Amen brother... it's all about the Capcom 2-D.

sounds like real warriors cant handle the extra dimension!

Talking O,
When you say that you've been playing it on your cab, do you mean that you've been using a PS2 emulator or do you have the console connected directly? BTW - Thanks for the review. :)

Actually, there are a few PS2 emulators out there. Haven't tried any them yet, though. Next project.

Does any one know if HDD Advance supports Tekken 5?
-
Worst character ever...
Yeah, whats up with that ghost (I think its supposed to be The Ring girll) grabbing his crotch in that pic anyway!? Also the fact that the guy wears g-string underwear just makes me want to vomit whenever I see that opening sequence.
Other than that its a great game (IMHO better than than Isuka).

Yeah I am playing it using hd advance. There are no load times. It is nice.
-
Well they aren't really playable...yet.
Sadly, you are correct, sir!

I'll have to throw mine on the ol' hard drive then :)
Playing a good console fighter always reminds me of how much I should build myself a console fighter stick. The controllers just don't cut it.

I wasted 50 bucks on tekken 5. It is a horrible game. Virtua fighter 4 was much better. I know it's not billed to be a realistic fighter, that's why I have Pride FC, BUT I'm a no holds barred vale tudo fighter...i select that first guy on there i think his name begins with a C or something because he had gloves on that looked vale tudo... sure enough he is in fact a vale tudo fighter...i choose him and he has pro wrestling moves like king rather than jiu jitsu, csw, muay thai or something good like that...i find the inaccuracy appaling... but it's a decent game, a good rehash of tekken 3... it's not without it's redeeming qualities though... i'd give it a rent first before you drop 50 like i did...

Horribly Decent?

yes, it's a horrible game because it is a rehash of tekken 3...
it is a decent game because it is tekken 3
lol

Tekken 5 is pretty good, it has some sick stages. The intro movie is awesome too, Tekken History is also cool (Tekken 1, 2 and 3) because you can go back to them and compare how crappy the graphics were to Tekken 5

will tekken 5 be coming to xbox like soul calibur 2 did?

Pretty much all of the styles in Tekken are "horribly inaccurate". You should hear the Capoeiristas complain about Eddy Gordo/ms. Eye-candy-what's-her-name. Or the boxers talk about Steve Fox. Or those who study Tae Kwon Do complain about Baek/Hwaorang. etc, etc. The simple fact is that it's darn near impossible to "accurately" depict a fighting style in a balanced fighting game. Particularly with something as nebulous as Vale Tudo, which isn't a style at all, but a catch all for the hybrid of styles used in No Holds Barred fighting (Vale Tudo literally means Anything Goes in Portugese, for those who don't know). I agree that whatever Craig is doing, it doesn't look like what I see in Pride, UFC, etc. Perhaps it'd be better to call his style "thug".
I'm straying from my point, though. My original point is that it's unreasonable to judge a fighting game based upon how accurately the style is depicted. I'm not by any means saying you have to love, or even like, Tekken 1, 2, 3, tag, 4, or 5, though. And I certainly won't argue that Virtua Fighter 4 is anything but an excellently put together, extremely techinical fighting game. To me they satisfy two different needs. Sometimes I like to play chess, and others, I like foosball.

I'd doubt it, Tekken has pretty much always been a Playstation exclusive. Of course there have been more exclusive licenses thrown out the window over the past few years than I can count, so anything's possible.

I never really cared for the Tekken series all that much, but I would have bought this game if it had online play.
