Title: Swappable Control Panel Mounting
Post by: cholin on February 27, 2005, 01:14:53 pm
Okay, I have an idea and I cant think of how to name this thread.  Notice how alot of people use hotswappable control panels, well I want to do that, but with a twist.  Usually, you have two options, use one hinged panel permanently, or use a swappable panel that does not have a hinge.  I want to use hotswappable control panels that can be lifted, so I need to think of a way to do this.  This is what I came up with, I might add a flash animation here later to show.

Get a hinge and attach a sort of frame to it so the frame gets hinged.
On the frame will be two drawer sliders (you know the tracks drawers slide on)
On the side of each panel will be the opposite sliders.

What happens is that you can lift the panel up to see under it or whatever -- due to the hinge w/ frame.  Once the panel is up on an angle, you can slide the actual panel out of the frame because of the drawer tracks.  The hinge will be at the back of the panel BTW, closest to the screen.

Good idea or bad?  Has anyone done this?  Is it a waste of time?

well first off, i'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what your talking about, and secondly, it sounds way too complicated.  listen to the age old saying that "the easiest solution is usually the best solution."

after saying all that, i'd lose the hinge, since it sounds like you mamed an original cab.  just create something to hold it down, and just be able to lift the panel off.  i might have more to add after the flash stuff.

Seems like there are many other items to spend time on before this one. I just don't see the value. If you do this, you'll still have to have some sort of mechanism to lock down the front of the panel. If you have one mechanism, you might as well just use 2 panel clamps and be done with it.

I agree, you could spend your time on better things.

However, if you decide to do this, then be careful that when you lift the control panel via the hinge that the controls do not hit the monitor (or plexiglass in front of the monitor).    Seems like this would happen if you decided to open the top to fix some stuff underneath and needed more room.
