Title: Crystal Castles restoration - * TRADED *
Post by: RayB on February 26, 2005, 01:42:59 pm
So as of today, I own Crystal Castles!

It's a little beat up, but fairly good over-all. The red in the gems on the front art has faded and there are a couple patches of scraped up art on the sides. Screen burn is noticeable, unfortunately and the marquee area needs fixin. (It's missing the middle Atari logo! AHH!). Overall a nice looking machine though.

Looks like Quarter Arcade sells the speaker area art:

Having owned Crystal Castles and many other silk screened atari cabinets I can say that a few hours with a careful hand and a sharpie will have that sideart looking good as new again, they screen the black on it last, and the black is always the first color to rub off. You will probably find that 90 percent of the flaws in your artwork are missing black.

Nice!  Crystal Castles is one of the few arcade games I hope to own an original of someday.    One of my earliest arcade memories is begging my mom for quarters to play it at Izzy's pizza. :)  Good times...

i have a crystal castles "kit" if anyone is interested. the kit consists of:
complete uncut wire harness
audio board
working pcb
marqee
control panel w/trackball
all of this came out of my dig dug cabinet so the cp will fit a dig dug. i dont know if it will fit a dedicated machine.

Unfortunately, the biggest cosmetic problems on this one are:

1. Front art has faded reds. All the gems are now almost white. (Strangely, bentley's hat is still perfect red!)
2. The white on the sides has yellowed. Can anything be done about that?

Other than that, I already ordered repro marquee, speaker overlay, and CP overlay from ArcadeRenovations.

The white might clean back up to be white again, often yellowing is actual nicotine staining.

What would you wash the sides with? Is a brush too abrasive? Should i use only water, or is soap ok?
