Title: ? - Anyone know the size and # of teeth in the gears in a Star Wars arcade yoke?
Post by: Ondedge on October 29, 2002, 02:06:32 pm
This is kind of a followup to my previous question.

If anyone has one of these and can possibly count the teeth in the hears and measure their size I would be grateful.

I searched all over using google, groups.google, and dogpile and could not come up with the info.

Once I find this info out I can scour the hobby shop catalogs and fild suitable replacement gears. I can then share the info with the board.

Thanks

Jason

Even a good digital picture of the rear would be all I need. Put a ruler next to it so I know the scale.

Just figured I'd say that in case you don't feel like counting teeth!

Anyway... thanks in advance!

I've searched everywhere that I can think of to find replacement gears with no luck.  If you find any, please let me know.  As for the number of teeth:

Gear, Teeth, Original Part Number
Small Gear, 14, 040249-01
Medium Gear, 28, 178101-003
Large Gear, 60, 040235-01

Let me know if you need anything else.  Brian

Which of those 3 gears go where?

Obviously the small gear goes on the pots. Are there 2  of the small gears used since there are 2 pots?

Which gear is for the X (l/r axis) and which is for the Y (u/d) axis of the 2 remaining?

Let me know.... finding gears to achieve the right ratio is the easy part. Mounting them is the tricky part (but should be able to be done).

thanks

Jason

Are you sure about the teeth count on the small gear you have listed?

All the pics I have seen show a small gear with more teeth than that.

I have to wonder if there are a lot of variations in the gear ratio.

Here is a ebay auction that I was looking at to try and figure the gears out:

THe "small" gear on that yoke appears to have at lease 28 teeth.

Just curious

I doubt the number of teeth is as important as the size of the gears, just as long as the teeth are the same sizes on all the gears.  Also, the sizes don't need to be exact, since you can tweak the sensitivity in Mame anyway.  Close should be good enough.

Sorry to butt in here, but the number of teeth is just one part of the puzzle, right?  Don't you also need to know the P.D. or gear pitch?  Spur gears with different pitch won't mesh.  I'm sure you can mix gears with various pressure angles on these yokes since these aren't transmitting much force, though.

I would be replacing all the gears... so matching pitch is a given.

I just wanted to get some idea of teeth count so I could figure out the gear ratio. I want to get close to the same ration in my replacements.

I am just going to use RC car gears... towerhobbies.com is a good source as they have pretty much every gear made. They show pics and gives all the info about the gear so finding some appropriate ones should be easy.

What I was trying to say is that the gear ratio is determined by the size (circumference) of the gears, not by the number of teeth!  The size/pitch/angle of the teeth would determine how much force you can apply before they slip or strip and possibly other factors, but the ratio is just the circumference of the gears in relation to each other, and therefore how many turns of one gear equals how many turns of the other.

I think if you can find gears of the equal pitch that are in the ballpark of what size the original gears were, you'd be set.  Also, you need to get pots that use the same number of turns as the SW pots (3/4 turn I think...)  Watch ebay, you might get lucky and find a yoke refurb kit, which would make your job a bit easier.

Doh! It's been awhile since my RC Car days..... forgot the pitch and size determine number of teeth.

Well... it should be easy then, I just need the size of the gears which someone should be able to get me. The pitch should be easy enough to come close to. The gears look to be about a 32 pitch... I can tell just from the pics I have that 48 pitch would be too fine and anything much less than 32 pitch would not have enough teeth.

My yoke should arrive in a couple of days..... it will be interesting to see how this goes.

Okay, I opened up my yoke and measured the gears.

There are 2 large gears, approx. 2 5/8" in diameter.  These go on the x and y axis shafts.  Then there are the smaller gears on the pots.  The x-axis pot has a gear about 1 15/16", and the y-axis pot has a smaller one, about 5/8" across.

Sorry, my camera is down, so I can't take any pics...

Good luck.

Thanks all.... I should be able to work something out.

I have found a website that sells pretty much every size gear that exists.

The large gears I buy will need to be bored out.... finding small gears with a .750 bore size is impossible (the size of the controller shafts) but I can buy gears that will work with a smaller bore. Some slow/careful drilling should do the trick.

The website is:

http://www.sdp-si.com/search3/

Another website associated with the same company that has some additional gears is:

https://trorderonline.thomasregister.com/ph_index.cgi?az=62436001&uuid=&clearcart=yes&origin=olc

THanks again,

Jason
