I loved those old text based games from the early 80's consoles!
When they started putting graphics in the games they definitely got better, but they lost something at the same time.
Scott Adams wrote some really good ones for this period if anyone hasn't heard of him and is interested in searching

yeah, thrilling:
Welcome to Zork. This version created 11-MAR-91 (PHP mod 25-OCT-2001)
There are 11 users playing Zork.
You are in an open field west of a big white house with a boarded
front door.
There is a small mailbox here.
> good
I don't understand that.
> **** you then
I don't understand that.
> run
Huh?
> hide
I don't understand that.
> go west
You are in a forest, with trees in all directions around you.
> chop down a ******* tree then...
I don't understand that.
> walk south
You are in a dimly lit forest, with large trees all around. To the
east, there appears to be sunlight.
> walk east
You are in a clearing, with a forest surrounding you on the west
and south.
There is a pile of leaves on the ground.
> eat the leaves
Taken.
I don't think that the pile of leaves would agree with you.
A grating appears on the ground.
> open
You must supply a direct object.
> open the ******* grate, you ingrate
I don't understand that.
>
::)

actually, i can't help myself now:
The grating is locked.
> unlock the grate
You must supply an indirect object.
> use key
I don't understand that.
> walk south
You are in a dimly lit forest, with large trees all around. To the
east, there appears to be sunlight.
> eat the sun

> valid input
I don't understand that.
> hello
Nice weather we've been having lately.
> yes, swell
I don't understand that.
> nice weather
I don't understand that.

I don't understand that.

I got your ZORK right here ;)

DG you remind me of myself when I played this for the first time (was it 1984?). I encountered a character in a cave and I remember being so disappointed that I couldn't converse with it. I had this really high expectation of artificial intelligence in this game. Then over time I learned how limited computer A.I. really is.

Out of the entire series, the only one I EVER finished was Zork 0 (prequel to original Zork)....
as far as figuring out what to do, I'd still be stuck in that white house with the Zork flyer from the mailbox... lol
