Title: Standard drill bit size for buttons?
Post by: j123vt_99 on February 24, 2005, 09:10:50 am
is there a standard size drill bit that you guys use to drill holes for buttons? Are all push buttons the same size?

You will need to make the holes 1 1/8".  You can use whatever kind of bit you want.  Some use spade bits, others use hole saws, and others even use forstner bits...  Dpending on the material you're trying to drill through, one may be better than the others.  I used a hole saw for mine.  I drilled through lexan and MDF at the same time...

is there a standard drill bit that will do 1 1/8"? I assume so

Holy crap, thats one heck of a drill bit..
Do you have a drill that support that size ? If you don't, its cheaper to get a hole saw

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't leaf-switch buttons require a larger hole than microswitch?

should be one of the first things you consider.

I don't recommend them unless your working with an existing cabinet that has them.. Even then, I would see if there would be a way to get a wood panel to work.  Just MUCH easier to work with... Only downside is some controllers don't work well with them.

With metal Cp's you need to put a lot of work, make it from wood and avoid the hassle

my cp is metal, and boy!! a really tough job

I know for a fact that the Wico translucent Leafs need a 1 3/16" hole.
I had to go buy another bit for the damn things.

Holy smokes, I've got the Wico translucents and just drilled holes now.  I used a 1 1/8" Forstner bit.  Some of the buttons were snug, and some were fine but that seemed like the right bit to use.  You could get away with using a 1 3/16" bit and it might even give you better transparency, but the 1 1/8" will work.
