How rare would you say this is, 1-10
-
Every second or 3rd auction normally has an Afterburner motion cockpit, they never go for very much. Usually $300ish.
If it is the R360 model then those are worth like $10,000 - $20,000, but almost every R360 ever made is still in service somewhere or another.
-
I had an operator try to give me one not too long ago (non-working)... that should give you some idea of the demand for these. The thing was HUGE!
I was very tempted, but marriage does not allow such folly ;)
-
HEAVY, not too rare, and not really in demand.
A cool thing IMHO, but what can you do with it besides Afterburner?
It sure would be a waste of time to MAME it.
On a numbers scale, maybe a 5. They were pretty standard in big arcades back in the day.
-
I've got two of those. Got 'em cheap, because the guy wanted his garage back. One I'm restoring, and one I'm using for parts (it's already missing enough it's never going to be complete again). When I've got it stripped, it's available for MAMEing. C'mon Gunstar, I know you want to MAME a cockpit!
-
Whenever somebody talks about an original cab/cockpit, why do people bring up mameing it, i was talking about the original machine , how rare it is ive seen one when i played it many years ago but theres no old cab finds where i live, theres no games to find here id love to walk into a place and see and old cab sitting there , you guys would mame your toilet bowl if givin the chance -tommy :)

Indeed I do... but not an Afterburner!

Tommy my friend, I think you thought you were in the KLOV forums. You posted this in the BUILD YOUR OWN ARCADE CONTROLS forum. Since many people here MAME arcade cabinets (while the rest build them from scratch), the obvious topic of what to MAME, what not to MAME, is a common topic.
We've also all seen Defender and Pac-Man cabs MAMEd with an X-Arcade control panel, so it's better safe than sorry to give advice about what to MAME and what not to MAME. If not for the benefit of the OP, then for the benefit of members who have been around for less than 3 weeks who might not know any better.

Why didn't I think of that!!!
I'm there long enough each day...
construction would go quick & I'd have SOOO much time to play.
Now... Where to put the display...
HAHA...
I could hook up custom controls to play a Jedi Knight in a whole new way! hehe...
Just swing too far right or left... You'll have a mess to mop up.
::)
Ha! I kill me...

you guys are funny taking that bowl mame for a ride
-
Figure, there is enough room in the tank to put a computer in there. SO it could be done
Talk about Water cooled systems.....
-
you guys are funny taking that bowl mame for a ride ;D thanks for explaining that wdog but come on you wouldnt think you need to explain you wouldnt want to mame a dedicated cockpit ride
Most older large cockpits are stripped for parts and dumpstered these days the minute ANYTHING goes wrong with them. Due to their size, weight, and the game you get for the money there is almost no demand for them. GO to any auction and wait around for the cockpit games, the pre-90 ones go for almost nothing, especially the broken ones.
-
Id take a afterburner cockpit for almost nothing ,ill fix her up good

kremmit post a pic pf your afterburner

Come to California, my friend. I need my game room back.
Seriously, I'm not into MAIMing classic dedicated cabs if it can be saved- Right now I'm restoring my other Afterburner, an Exidy Victory, and a Sega Super Hang-On - but this game could be restored only by stripping another one. (You know, if I wasn't spending so much energy on restorations, I'd probably have gotten around to building my MAME cab by now...) It's obviously already been used as a parts donor. The electronics seem to be mostly all there, but lots of other parts are gone or cracked up pretty bad. I never see those parts on ebay or anywhere else. It could be gotten back to "playable" status (without motion) pretty easy, but "complete & fully working" would be a nightmare. If I thought it was save-able, I'd do it, as I am with my other one- but really, it's MAME bait at this point.
That said, it really would make a nice MAME cab for somebody who's not afraid of the size/weight issue. While it'd be hard to get the PROPER parts to restore it, it wouldn't be hard at all to MAKE perfectly good looking REPLACEMENTS for the missing stuff. For that matter, it could be JAMMAtized just as easy. And how cool would it be for PC gaming- or even web surfing, movies, etc.? I'd do it, but my game room just can't spare the real estate for TWO of the things! ;D

kremmit post a pic pf your afterburner
Ok, give me a few minutes...
-
Kremmit i wasnt offering to buy your part afcp, i would buy a nonworking complete afterburner if the shipping wasent nuts, but let me see your better afterburner
-
Oh, I thought you wanted to see the bad one. I only took one of the good one, it's the first pic. The 2nd is a shot of the bad one, showing one of the missing panels.
But the shipping, I assure you, would be nuts. Aren't you in Canada? These things weigh over 1000 lbs, and they're enormous, and can't be broken down.
-
Thats sweet , does it work all the way or will it , ive got fifty cents let me try it
-
ahhhhh i'm in the mood for a guiness.....yes, it is a lovely day for a guiness.
do you drink and fly? walk over and drink and drive? ;D
-
No motion right now, but it plays. Intermittent video issues, which I hope to cure by stealing the boardset from the dead game (which plays blind).
Off Road is going MAME, too. It's empty inside- no PCB, no monitor, no power supply, no harness. Externally I'm keeping it original, so it'll be un-MAMEable if somebody wants to down the road. But right now, I need Off-Road and Championship Sprint, plus all the other drivers, so that's where that one's going.
I have too many projects.

That room USED to be devoted to beer, instead of games. When the guys and I are out there, we drink and fly, drink and drive, drink and drink...
There are 4 beer-related items in those pictures, Can You Find Them All?
-
What a familiar Off-Road cab... ;)
-
Hey, Gunstar, I've been meaning to ask, were you Mr. Silent when I came down to pick that thing up?
-
In response to the tiolet comment.....

Someone asked what's the diff between Afterburner and R360...
Look here and it will be obvious:

(R360 rotates all around. It's HUGE)

Or you could go rent T-2. They have a short scene in there where you can see it in action.....
