Title: Point me in the right direction for DOS stuff!
Post by: slicer_d on February 23, 2005, 10:29:09 pm
Hey guys I'm running a 533 in my custom built cocktail cab and its a little slow and prone to crashing with windows XP on it.  I really want to run DOS on it but I dont even know where to start.  If somebody could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

I realize that I will have to customize it with my own drivers for my sound and video card. I'm not expecting somebody to hold my hand through the process but I think the last time I heavilly used dos was about 10-12 years ago.

Thanks for any help
Slicer_D

P.S. I'm also using game launcher as my front end

To answer my own post I found this and I should give me most off the info I need.
http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/

If anybody has any suggestions about running MAME in DOS I would still like to hear them.

Thanks
Matt

I run MAME in pure DOS and no regrets, specially the Advance Mame w/Arcade monitors.
First off, you need to get you soundcard going, configure that first, well Partitioning and formating your HD and installing DOS OS is actually first, then the soundcard is next. Once those 2 are done, move onto the next step----deciding/configuring the software and FE.

-First install our OS  using a PC Screen (not the arcade one if you have one)
- 2) configure the soundcard. If you have a modern soundcard you can have diffulties to find a Dos drivers. May be it doesn't exists. If you have a Real Sound Blaster card you can find it easly.
-3) choose you front end and MAME version  . My opinion :
if you have an arcade screen
       - if you have an ArcadeVGA -> DMAME
       - if you another VGA card -> ADVMAME
if you don't have an arcade Screen what you want.
    Front end :
-Advmenu  (even if you don't use ADVMAME)  or
      -Arcade OS

-4) set up your mame and front end

-5) If you have an arcade screen and NOT a ArcadeVGA
  -Install the ARCMON.SYS dos driver.

-6) Plug your PC on the arcade screen.

-7) adjust your settings

Thanks for the replies guys I think I should be able to figure most of it out now.

I was reading through the page I had poseted above and it talks about an I686 dos optimized version of mame.

Since I have no idea when they will release the .92 version.  Does anybody have MAME .90 or .91 DOS I686 version.

Sir Poonga most games run alright in XP some are slow but thats to be expected with a 550. When I swtich between games it takes a while and games slow down after running a few.  I'm hoping to help those problems and also it has been crashing on me a lot and I would rather try a new dos install then just reinstalling XP again.  XP seems like a bit of overkill to.
