Post by: Pieman2004 on February 22, 2005, 10:58:55 pm
I just saw a deal on these controllers.

The pic is here (http://hardware.gamespot.com/Mad-Catz-RetroCON-PlayStation-2-13579-O-28-31)

The deal is here (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1091102280924&skuId=6818045&type=product)

They are playstation 2 controllers that look kinda like old school nintendo controllers. Just thought I'd let ya know.

I picked a couple of these up today. Great looking controllers! Get the ones with the nice black finish on them.

Dangit, I went to my local BB, and they don't have the black face ones, only grey.  Your choice of darker grey or blue around the outside ring, though.

beleive it or not, i bought these for tekken, and tekken only..

and tbh, i love how there so flat.. i dont use my thumb (right side) for fighters, due to so much arcade use.. but i use my first 3 fingers instead..

and man, THEY LIGHT UP! wow, totally didnt see that comming when i powered on the ps2 with one plugged in..

Im SERIOUSLY considering going and buying 2 more..

as  a warning, they're not the best controllers for people with big hands, maybe even people with medium hands.  i can't believe i paid 22 bucks.  i thought it was a deal...

i picked up 2 of them today, btw i registered because of this post :)... they only had the grey kind where I went... they seem alright, haven't used them yet but $10 for two ps2 controllers that light up seemed like a good deal to me.

I bought one also, for my wife.  She has smaller hands so I thought it may be good for her.  The LEDs are pretty cool.  The only thing I don't like about them is that you can't push the analog sticks as buttons like on the original Dual Shocks.

they look neat when turned on and everything, but i am not very happy with the control i get from using them...they are probably great for playing stuff like megaman anniversary (if i hadn't beat it already) or something from nes or even some classic atari collection maybe, but for games like shadow of rome, it just doesn't fell right, i dunno... still can't beat it for 5 bucks...

Dpad is weird...

but it works.. i bought em for tekken tbh.. laf

I finished playing Super Mario Kart with one for two hours.  This is not a good controller for any game which requires precise movement.  The d-pad is not flexible; it is weighted toward the right/down-right corner.  The L and R buttons are small, which is ok, but they don't popup fast enough, so games that require you to use these buttons as fast as you can will be a problem.  The X Y B A buttons light up turquoise, purple, magenta, and light green.  They should have used colors which matched or matched the controller.  These are good controllers for some old games, but there's a reason they don't make them like this anymore.

i found a ps2 NES (well ps1 emu, but works on ps2) emu that plays most of the nes games, it'll work great with those retrocons, i hope... i've posted a topic in the console forum :)

Thanks for the tip, I picked up one today and I like it.  I was going to grab two, but since they were out of the black, I just went with the sliver face with dark grey outter.  Not a bad deal, but it makes me sad b/c I realize I have no friends to come over and play with me.

Yeah, I was pushing the buttons too lightly.  I got them to work now.  :-[

i have them sitting on a shelf... they aren't very good for shadow of rome and anything like that... i dunno... i like my ps2 controllers, but if i ever got a ps2 nes emu that works i'd use em lol

I went back to BB and they had two of the black face ones there, so I snagged 'em.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to crack 'em open, anybody open theirs?  I already pried the MadCatz label plate off of the back, no screws or anything hiding under there.

thx for the tip Pieman, scored 2 black ones. I really like the rubber cushion grip on the bottom, and i do beleive they have a nice weighted feel for being so small. 2 thumbs up for the lighted buttons as well  ;D thx again.

Something I couldn't find documented and others may like to know.

For some games you made need to be in analog mode.  To do this you you have to hold select and start down for like 2 seconds.  Do the same to go back.

If you do this in the control panel you'll see the difference.

Best $10 I've spent on any type of inputs in a long while.

Mine said how to turn analog on/off in the papers that came with it.(Sometimes I feel like reading stupid crap like that)

Oh I just ordered a playstation to usb adapter so now I'll be able to play some nes with it. There aren't any good nes emulators for ps2 so I figured I'd just use the old laptop. hopefully it will work out well for me.
