Hey all!
-
I am amazed. That really is a work of art.
-
are all of those pictures rendered? Do you have actual photos of a finished cab?
-
GREAT WORK! LOOKS AMAZING!
-
1UP, that is a thing of beauty! Congrats, I know you worked hard to make it a reality.
-
Magnificent! Now get some actual cab pics up. ;)
Seriously, I've always loved your cab design. This is excellent news.
Any details on the construction? CNC, MDF, laminate or melamine?
Ah, heck, just send me a unit to review. I'll take care of the details. ;D
Kevin
-
You trademarked everything, right ;D
-
Nicely done 1up, hope everything goes well for you in the new venture. You've worked hard enough at this stage, lets face it. Love the rotating panel thing, Wish I had the skills to do my own one LOL!!
Best of luck chief!
-
That thing is amazing. I'm actually seriously thinking about selling my car to finance one.
*looks at wife*
*deletes*
Seriously though, I will post links to your site on some of the other forums I sleaze about at. Hope it brings you the success you deserve.
-
1up. Nice work!!
Just wondering if you're going to be selling those mini Tron sticks anytime soon? As I would like to purchase 2.
Thanks!

drool.

If I had the money budgeted, I'd pick one up in a second
Can't wait to see some live pics of this baby in action!
-
Those are very, very nice. I wish my pockets were a little deeper :-\ I'm sure that I'll never be able to build one quite as nice.

-
Me likey likey. ;D
-
I've been married for 6 years and I finally know what love is!!!
-
Holy frijoles, that thing is absolutely gorgeous. While I'm not in the market for a cab, I wish you all the luck with these, 1UP...although, given how nice it looks, I don't think you'll need "luck". ;)
-
Yeah, congratulations. This must be an exciting moment for you. I've been checking out your site regularly and figured something was coming yesterday when I went to your site and it was back to normal, without the Spincade Preview thing going on. You'll have to keep us updated on all the celebrities who become customers. I can't wait to see one on MTV Cribs ;D
I've got to say, it's nice to see products built by people who really appreciate and have a love for their creation. I can't see any cut corners. No visible trackball plate or anything of the sort. As has been mentioned, it really is a thing of beauty. Your attention to detail (not to mention the spinning control panels ;) ) puts this thing in a class of it's own.
-
That's really a beautiful cabinet!
I think the rotating panels are cool too
but.. let's say an Arnold Schwarzeneggerish type person were to play on a regular basis
what measures have been taken to keep the cp from getting all wobbly?
this is something that i worry about with hot swappable control panels as well
-
If you where around for when he was posting build pictures of his original cabinet... The rotary part is very very secure (some think pipe). I would guess (if still made the same way) that you would destroy the wood around the cabinet before you harmed the rotary mechanism.
-
Very nice looking product. Sadly it's priced far, far outside of my personal price range (I didn't pay that much for my car).

Very nice...looks like you've thought of everything!
-
Thanks for all the comments!
Now for the questions:
Photos will of course be coming soon. I live about 100 miles from the cabinet shop, so it's not easy to get up there often. I want to wait until I can hire a professional to do it justice.
The construction is all black melamine MDF, CNC'ed and dadoed, glued and screwed for a very solid feel.
All artwork is screen printed on a velvet-finish lexan for control panels, and vinyl on the side art. Control panels are back printed, with the printing between the lexan and adhesive layer. The ink will never rub off. The trackball plate is counter-sunk and mounted beneath the artwork for a seamless appearance.
The rotation mechanism is an all new design, milled from steel, with a nylon bearing for solid, smooth motion. The automatic clamping method is pretty secure, but the front door can be locked for additional rigidity.
All the cabinet hardware (bezel retainer, security bar etc.) are powder-coated for a durable finish.
Uhmm...I think that was everything. Feel free to ask anything else. This post will probably become my FAQ! ;)
-
Wow...that's about the most "checklist perfect" cabinet manufacturing I've ever heard of!
Can't wait for the photos.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to send out any "test" units right now. Need some orders first...

I have a question about the steering wheel panel. Considering that there are few driving games in Mame worth playing with a 270 wheel, perhaps you should consider putting a small trackball or a touchpad on that panel for navigating windows and selecting games and navigating game menus, etc. I know they make touchpads, like what you find on laptops, that are made to be mounted on, e.g., a countertop....for kiosks, etc.
Is there something I'm missing that already makes Windows/game menu navigation a non-issue from this panel?
-
I think you should have the option of a 270 or 360 wheel.
-
..and how about an optional rotating monitor?
It would be the Ultimate Spinner!!!
-
The steering wheel I'm currently offering is actually a Playstation 2 wheel, which means of course that it has a d-pad for navigation.
-
awesome, awesome job 1up. That cab looks amazing. Unfortunately, its out of my means as a college student... but give me a few years and maybe we can talk LOL.
Good luck with the sales... I'm sure once people see the real thing, orders will roll in.
-
I may have to forego my Pinball purchase and pick up one of these.
Kudos to 1up for such an amazing product.
-
1UP, buddy... pal...
BYOAC discount?
Maybe a "Trade In your old cab" promotion..?
Will you accept a slightly used soul? ;D
-
I may have to forego my Pinball purchase and pick up one of these.
Kudos to 1up for such an amazing product.
Hehe, if you like PinMameTM, just wait until I finish the pinball attachment... ;)

What pinball apps use a pot? (Now is the time to get in those feature requests!)
-
There was one that used joystick input. I can't recall off hand.
Most, however, would just require a plunger to pull back and trip a microswitch, then let go when enough power is up.
-
The plunger is a given. It just doesn't feel right to fire the ball with a button.
-
Looks awesome.
What about rotating joysticks for Ikari, Heavy Barrel, Time Soldiers and so on?
And how do you "spin" the CP's? Is this going to be mechanized, or do you have to do it manually? Also, are all controls always active or is there more to the "switching" involved?
-

All controls are active. The switch literally takes 2-3 seconds.
Rotary sticks will be a later option. They would probably take the place of the competition sticks. Of course, that will depend on demand for them.
I should mention that we can take any requests for customization to suit your needs, as long as there are parts out there to fill them (a rotary interface, for example.) All you need to do is ask for a quote at orders@spincade.com and we will be happy to oblige. Just be aware that it will be above and beyond the base cost.
-
No rotating monitors, I'm afraid.
-
The mini-tron sticks should be available as soon as I have a production run. They are not economical to make in small batches.
Don't mean to derail the Spincade parade too much on ya, but I would definitely be interested in these. :)
-
Hehe, I'm already calling my fabricator.... ;)
-
have not been BYOAC for a looooong while...
just knew that getting married will take your time off your hobbies... (also... picked up an online game will almost give you an instant divoice also... haa haa...)
and I'm back (partially...)
AND I FOUND THIS !!!!!
HOLY COW !!!!... THIS IS VERY GOOD !!! NICE !! SOOO NICE !!!
(sorry... don't know the right word to explain this...)
but its like a dream comes true....
too bad I'm married.... you should have started selling this before I paid the catering hall bills... flower bill... pics bills.......
dammm... that is REAL NICE !!!...
REALLY REALLY NICE....
-
Beautiful - but waaayyyy to expensive for me.. How about a build it yourself kit?
-
Probably wouldn't be much cheaper, especially if I made it a snap-together kit like Slikstik. Setting up the cams in the proper locations takes some research, and in the end wouldn't be as strong unless you glued it too.
-
The mini-tron sticks should be available as soon as I have a production run.
-
Fantastic work, Rob!! I'm sure you will have plenty of happy & enthusiastic customers.
BTW, I'm down for one of your Tron sticks, too. :)
-
Rob,
Let me know if you want a UK distributor for these! Can't see it being economical to shift these over to UK unless it was done in bulk.(A container load of spincades, now there's a thought!)
Whilst the price for one of these would be prohibitive due to the shipping I would most definitely be up for the mini-tron joysticks.
-

-
I will definetly go for one of those tron joysticks.
Please could you get some real pics up stat.I need some cabinet/porn badly. Thanks ;D
-
I should be heading up to the plant this weekend, with camera in hand...
I am still waiting on a quote from my fabricator on the joystick shafts. Please be patient...
-
I'm another interested in teh mini tron stick
-
You should have Slikstik make some stainless steel versions of the tron sticks, LOL.
-

Oh yeah, a joystick you can kill someone with...literally!
(bwahahaha!, evil doers beware!)
-
Yeah, but do you know anywhere I can get some 1/4" thick springs to support the weight?
:o
-
Bump!
-
How many of these monsters have you sold? What were they like 6000 dollars? ???
-
Out of curiosity: How are you going to handle the "PC Support" side of this? Conventional wisdom says that people will screw their computers up if you let 'em. :)
I noticed that you include a PC "with custom startup screens that add to the arcade feel. Boots directly into 3DArcade without showing any Windows elements!" Is this also partly done to "lock" people out of the normal Windows OS? Or do you include a "ghost" image CD to restore everything?
Just wondering.
Oh yeah, and I await seeing some actual pictures too. :)
-
I am currently working with a few customers who want a slightly different setup from the stock configuration, which is a service I provide.
-
Locking people out of the OS would present some problems for the customers who plan to install MAME and a bunch of ROMS that they don't legally own. I know that people willing to stoop so low would be few and far between ;), but I digress...
-
No one will be locked out. You can always quit the FE or alt-tab to another window to do your maintenance. This is not an all-or--nothing setup. :)
The main feature of this system is flexibility. It can ship with our stock setup, but you can order it with the OS only, or a blank HD, or no HD, or no PC, or a different PC, or no guts, or a different steering wheel, or custom sideart, or whatever. I mean it when I say I am offering the ultimate gaming machine, and I stand behind that by allowing my customers to make it THEIR ultimate gaming machine. We will do whatever it takes to that end, other than completely redesigning the cabinet.
Of course, all of that requires a custom quote. Operators are standing by...
-
I did a search on Spincade today to see how word is spreading. The overall response has been positive, most people like the features and the looks. All agree that they can't afford it, which is something I can't really do anything about until I get enough orders to produce parts in quantity... :-\
It's a vicious circle.
Anyway, I found this web radio show called the Overnightscape, where the host does a few minutes about it. It was nice to hear that he liked it so much!
Here's the link to stream it into your favorite mp3 player. http://www.bluffcosm.com/mp3/The_Overnightscape_0127.m3u It starts about 4 minutes into the show (right after he finishes his review of Vanilla Dr. Pepper...
Oh, I also saw Kevin Steele's blurb about it, which incidentally pretty much sums up the radio clip.
-
1UP,
You always could try the "Hanaho Maneuver" -- give away a cabinet to be used in the locker rooms of a major league sports team. (I believe they did it with the Angels)
Hanaho did that, and got sales not only from nearly every home player, but a bunch of visiting team players as well...
Another good idea is to try and get a deal with Brookstone or Sharper Image (once again, I believe Hanaho has done this).
(Oh, and the Spincade blurb in the Overnightscape comes at 3:12 into the show)
Kevin
(edit:spelling)

Or "The Real World", "Big Brother" or just send one to Puff Daddy. Then they'd start showing up in all the episodes of MTV Cribs, right next to the Tony Montana Scarface posters :)
-
Send a review unit to Maximum PC.
-
Tawny Kitane (sp?) did wonders for Jaguar when she slithered around on the hood of that XJ-12 in the Whitesnake video...
You're an LA guy, how 'bout a Jeri Lee shoot with the Spincade?!
-
Send a review unit to Maximum PC.
Eh, they're not the powerhouse they used to be (they've started losing editors at an alarming rate, never a good sign for a magazine)
I'd recommend Maxim, as they tend to cater to the male with a lot of disposable income. ;)
Kevin
-
I plan to do all of those things and more.
-
Are you saying I should have Jeri slither around on my joysticks? :o
As a matter of fact...
-
Pics? (with or without Jeri Lee?)
-
Pics tomorrow night!
-
sell any yet?
-
sell any yet?
Just a couple. BYOAC is not exactly the right market for these. ;)
-
Thats awesome though. I hope you sell the bejesus out of those things. And then give away one free as a promotinal tool....to me.
-
um...pics?
-
I had asked to have some changes made this week, and the production guys didn't know I was coming yesterday. Which meant the cab was not in a state to be photographed.
-
do we have any pricing ranges yet on teh repro tron sticks? or is it too soon?
-
This should be compatible with a wider range of sticks. :)
...with 49-ways perhaps? ;)
-
-

So close, and yet so far...
I went up to the factory yesterday to get some pictures of the cab (finally). I spent several hours there, then headed out for the long drive home...and left my camera in the plant! >:(
I have to go back Monday for a meeting, so I'll have pictures for sure on Monday night...provided someone doesn't kick the camera off the workbench. :-X
-
OK that really chaps my hide. Please lets get some pics up stat...HEHEH it figures you forgot your camera:)

Photos!

I must say those are looking really nice, any plans to sell just the spinning control panel assembly?
-
sexsay
-
Oh, and will they all come with that sticker package? Because that is pretty nice.
-
kickbutt Rob, the graphics package really intensifies all the details.
-
the jysticks dont allign with teh 8 arrows correctly BTW
-
WOW! I think it looks better than the renders! The colors are a lot more vibrant in the photo. Fantastic job on graphics!
BTW, not to appear stupid, but why the 8th button?
-

None yet, but you never know.
Oh, and will they all come with that sticker package? Because that is pretty nice.
Yes, the full system does.
-
One more.
-
Very, very awesome, the whole kit is well out of my price range, but I might be down for just a control panel assembly if you ever offer those separate.
-
One more.
When are those joysticks going to be available separately?

How do those lit buttons feel as compared to the standard happ pushbuttons?
They're pretty good. A little stiff right out of the box, but if you take the springs out, they feel pretty much like the volcano buttons. Gotta have at least one panel with lit buttons though. :)
-
its a shame those tron sticks dont glow
-
Eh..you might wanna get rid those buttons right below the 6 button setup.Everything else looks great keep up the good work ! 8)
-
Have any of these been sold yet?
-
So pretty I could weep. I am making it one of my goals in life to own one of these beasts at some point.

With the contrasting colors I can't quite make out what teh BIG buttons are for.
-
With the contrasting colors I can't quite make out what teh BIG buttons are for.
Change Game and Show Controls. All the panels have these. Change Game is just a dedicated exit button that quits back to the FE, and Show Controls brings up a screen that displays the buttons used in the currently selected game.
-
Eh..you might wanna get rid those buttons right below the 6 button setup.Everything else looks great keep up the good work ! 8)
The extra buttons are for consoles. They also allow you to use a Neo Geo layout, and give you properly located Hyperspace/Shield/Smartbomb buttons for Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Defender, etc. They aint goin nowhere!
-
Looks AWESOME!!!
I'm first in line for the tron sticks!!!!
BTW, Congrads on your first couple of sales!!!

-
No one from the fighting game community would like this button setup.
-
Haha! You hear that snake! :police:
If you can disable them then it's all good..
-
Looks great, 1UP. I can't imagine the amount of work you put into getting this off the ground, but the results look like it was worth it. :)
-
Well, you know what my next question is going to be...
-
No one from the fighting game community would like this button setup.
-
I bet width is more of in issue. If I remember the plans (if they are even close to the same as the original plans that is) you need to take an inch from each side. Then you have the issue of 4way in the middle and making sure you can use it. My only comment might be adding a few buttons for the 4way itself. But the layout I think is great.
I've tried a layout similar to this (only one on the bottom) and I kinda liked it...
Then I tried a double 8...
Now I removed the extra button on the top far right because I never use it..
-
No one from the fighting game community would like this button setup.
-
I don't rest my palm on fighting games anyway, so I think it's going to be a matter of taste, but probably a moot point anyway. Someone that is planning on buying a $5k arcade machine, I don't think they're going to be discriminating enough to know the difference, otherwise, they'd be buying about 7 dedicated machines for the same price and have the exact perfect controls. Im' sure that the market for this is going to be a basement toy for folks that aren't necessarily serious gamers.
-
Yeah but why not just make straight 8 button layout ???
That way you can use the 6 button setup for streetfighter and other 2 buttons for something useful. Why does the extra 2 buttons has to be where you put your palm ?? Its very incomfortable ya know.Anyway,I am only giving you ideas on improving your fighter panel layout :)
As Lilwolf said, there are space constraints that prevent putting two extra buttons on the ends. The bottom row can easily be used as a Neo Geo/Soul Calibur 2 type layout with the extra buttons. Also, unless you have very small hands, your should be able to rest your palms over the extra buttons without touching them. In fact, your thumb rests between the bottom two buttons, because they are offset from the rest.
If someone who is actually a customer doesn't want the extra buttons, we'll just take them out, no biggie. But I think because this machine is intended to be a multi-platform cab with console compatibility, I don't want to limit customers by removing buttons that may be needed for certain games.
-
I've got a question 1UP. Your website says that the steering wheel is an option. If you don't get the wheel, what does the 3rd CP look like? Do you leave it blank or...?
-
I've got a question 1UP.
-
I've got a question 1UP.

Yes, everything is switchable on the 3rd panel. Hence the "modular design". :)

A few more of the driving setup.

Here's a closeup.

Awesome tron-like artwork came out very nice. Its still out of my league in terms of pricing but man I'm sure people with the money to spend will purchase it.
What happened to the old original 1-up cabinet? Please dont say you sold it....
-
What happened to the old original 1-up cabinet? Please dont say you sold it....
It's still around, although it's been parted out a bit for the prototype. I plan to refurbish it, install the new rotation mechs, and give it to my sister's family to make room for a Spincade demo unit at home. My bro in law loves arcade stuff (has a huge console collection with several Dreamcasts, a foosball and a pinball table.)
-
In other news, look for an announcement on the Tron shafts sometime Saturday afternoon/evening... ;)
