Title: What's the deal with...
Post by: APFelon on February 20, 2005, 09:29:44 am
...all of the softporn avatars?

I mean, seriously. Guys are kicked out of the chatroom for saying "---gosh-darn---" but animated GIFs of women rubbing their tits or deep throating a banana is A-OK?

I bring this up for a couple of reasons. The first is that I was showing my wife some of the cool projects on the "Project Announcements" page and she commented on someones girlie avatar.  It was an... uncomfortable situation, to say the least.

The second reason is that I see that this is a recent phenomenon for this forum. BYOAC has always maintained a mature atmosphere yet is family friendly(for the most part). I am kind of surprised that titty-rubbin' avatars are allowed at all. It's kind of icky.

Before anyone posts "lighten up" or "What are you, some kind of puritan?", I'll just say not to bother. Defense of an idea with ad hominem attacks is not a defense at all (despite the weight this defense seems to have in the Intarweb). Serious arguments are welcome, though.

Did it myself for a touch, but dropped it.  I was disappointed in myself (I saw saint's point, and yours) because I felt I should have not "jumped into the fray".

I had the same situation come up, but didn't have an issue with explaining it to the wife, I simply chose to block everyone's av after that, as it is an option.  I periodically take the block off to see if I'll have the same issue, and as of today, have decided to leave it on for a bit.

While it doesn't offend me, I certainly can see your point.  Is blocking everyone's avatar not something you wish to consider in order to self-police your computer?

Ah, it was an option I hadn't considered (read: forgotten the option was available).

Avatars are a handy visual aid for flagging posts from... erm, "useful" contributors and skipping posts from those who usually post flotsam or are constantly OT. But if it turns out that my objection falls on deaf ears, turning them off is the only option.

Thanks for the heads up, Drew.

The other option is to just police it.  I am in favor of having avatars.  If I scan through a post I can usually 1) see who is in the discussion based on avatars 2) instantly know if I was involved in a discussion that revived from the dead.

Yeah, I know....and readily admit I'm more than likely considered "flotsam" to some as well  ;D

With all the folks having some signature line, though, it won't be as hard as you think to follow some of your threads.

BTW, the sig line is an option too, so if those ever are obnoxious, those can be turned off as well.

Hopefully the new rules will clarify this. Any confusion or offense is my fault. One man's cheesecake is another man's pornography. I let the fact that I liked some of the avatars blind me to the fact that I probably wasn't asking everyone to hold to the same standards.

For the record, there isn't any ill-will or bad feelings towards anyone or their avatars, and hope it does not come across as such. To keep things family friendly, I'm asking everyone to read the updated rules and stick to those standards for avatars and signatures. Please give me a holler if there's any questions, or post them here.

Thanks!
