When it says "User ID kept private" as the high bid, it makes me think that the seller is upping the price himself.

I agree with you. I think that's shady as hell.
I wouldn't bid on any auction like that. After all, whatever he's selling, they made more than one.

Some sellers claim its to protect his buyers from being emailed with alternative offers, but I always steer clear of those auctions too.

What would be the advantage of keeping the ID's Private for anything "normal" and non porn anyway?
What could the advantage possibily be that would override the questions?

If you had a buddy that just registered, or you registered your dog, you could keep bidding and bidding and bidding.
I guess it's the el-cheapo way of putting on a reserve price.
