Title: Tron Joystick security hex bolt help please
Post by: Doc Wehr on February 14, 2005, 04:59:40 pm
Is there anyone in DFW that has one of these security hex wrenches?  I just need to open the joystick up to remove it from it's control panel.  I'm going to replace with normal hex after it is open.   I just need help opening it.  Thanks.

Go to Sears or Harbor Freight or most auto parts stores and buy a set of Tamerproof Torx bits. Tron and most other Midway games used T-20 Torx Tamperproof.

If you're going to keep with the arcade stuff after this one Tron stick, I'd buy the bits.  They're not really that expensive, and I keep finding those damn screws on all sorts of arcade stuff.  (Guess they don't want kids to be able to take the joysticks apart with a bike tool, go figure!)

I'd still swap the screws out for standard head ones once you get them apart, though.  Seems like every one I get is rusty as heck.  Brass or stainless replacements are worth the extra pennies.

They aren't very expensive.  Bob Roberts sells them.  I ordered a set online for around $6 or $7 and that included shipping.

I got a whole set at Lowe's pretty cheap.
GETTING them, and actually being able to get the bolts OUT with them, are entirely different propositions though.

Of the 30 bolts I've TRIED to remove with them on joysticks, only about 20 came out.
The rest all had to be removed with a "Screw-Out" from Sears.
Once you DO get them out, I highly recommend replacing them with standard bolts.

They are 10X32, IIRC.
I replaced all of mine with some nice brass bolts from Home Depot.
The brass is not as shiny as the stainless ones, so it doesn't draw as much attention to itself.

Just got home from the mall- Sears had a Craftsman set for $9.99.  Not as cheap as from Bob, but you get them right away, and no shipping cost.

Strangely, the package didn't say "Security" on it anywhere.  They were labeled as if they were just standard Torx.  The little picture on the package had a circle in the middle of the star shape that indicated the pattern of the bit, but that was all.
