Title: keyboard/gamepad encoder technical ramblings

As if we have not had enough threads about encoder speed comparisons here...!!
How does game-pad emulation fit into the picture?
At first glance gamepads seem a logical choice, after all, they were designed for gaming and have buttons and joysticks which we all know about, rather than keyswitches right?
