I've seen designs for CPs where the button spacing runs anywhere from 1.5" to 2.0". What is the optimal spacing in your mind? What's the spacing on various orginal arcade games?

Depends...
Depends if we're talking about a 2-button game, or a 6-button game...
Ideally, keep them close together, so that you can easily keep your fingers "hovering" above them in a natural position.

I use 1.5 inch, but I'm sure it's a personal preference thing. You really shoud make a cardboard mockup to see which feels better to you.

Generally I'd say minimum 1/8" between buttons to maximum 1/4"

I use 1.5 inch.
Same here...

I used 1.5" based on the center of each button and it felt right to me. I agree though, set it up on some cardboard and see how it feels to you.

1.5-inch, as I say here (http://www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/arcadepanels/faq.htm#What%20is%20the%20minimum%20button%20spacing%20that%20I%20can%20use?)

Don't know what these "inch" things you are talking about are but my spacing is 40mm and I find it perfect. It's a personal thing though.

1.5748 inches is pretty close to 1-1/2"

I use 1-3/8" which puts the button shrouds so that they actually touch each other.
Just don't err to the short side, or they will HIT, and not go in flush.
