Title: Has there been anything really NEW or REVOLUTINARY lately?
Post by: nipsmg on February 10, 2005, 09:14:34 am
I've been on BYOAC since the speedhost days, and have been a loyal fan and enthusiast since day one.  I've shared a passion for this hobby that many people just don't understand.  One of the things that made me love this hobby was that there was continually this push forward, with new and exciting developments and ideas coming out all the time.

However, maybe I've just become complacent, but it seems to have plateaued.  Maybe that's the nature of things in general, that in the beginning the advancements are large leaps,  but when time goes on, advancement comes in smaller steps.

Has anyone seen anything REALLY NEW or Revolutionary?  ANy new cabinets that just blow people away, any new products or software that are just amazing (I actually like atomicFE)? Any large leaps forward in this hobby?  I'm not saying I don't love this hobby anymore, because I do.  I'm just hoping there's some gems that I've missed.l

Ummm 1up's new cabinet kit with rotating CP?

Oscar's newly announced spinner with the world's smallest footprint?

Randy's transparent ball-top joysticks?

My limited-run Wico red ball-top joys with fire button on top?

...?

While it's not super-new, the AKI analog board is pretty revolutionary, at least IMO.

I don't see the Aki ANALOG Kontrol board on Dave's site anymore. Do you know where it went?

http://dave.bit2000.com/ - click products.

I second the AKI - one of the most useful things I've bought.  Quick explanation: IPAC for (pot-based) analog controls :)  See the site for full info...

No, nevermind... just a glitch in my browser. Had to switch to another one to see the content. When I first got there, it was just a banner at the top. The other browser took care of it, though.

Like RayB said - Also RandyT's new GP-Eco, a gamepad encoder, the KeyWiz Eco2, a full-featured encoder for under $20.

Golden Tee (recent) is coming to MAME.

And (oh yeah), Floyd10 left . . .

My limited-run Wico red ball-top joys with fire button on top?

That was a revolution I wish I'd got in on.  DOH!!!

BTW, I believe that the Slikstik Tornado is still the spinner with the smallest footprint.  It would be more accurate, I think, to refer to it as the push/(pull???) spinner with the smallest footprint.  I think the footprint of the Tornado is right about 2 inches square, while the new Oscar spinner is 2 something by 3 something.  Still, I was planning on a Tornado, but now I think Oscar's finally got a spinner that will fit in my panel -- with push (and maybe pull) functionality.  And it's nearly half the price!!!  I still need to take exact measurements for sure, but if it fits I'm definitely getting one.

If Oscar is able to add push & pull to his new spinner I'll seriously consider buying one to replace my Tornado.

You are right, the "new" things have slowed down.

The biggest news for me is the use of 49-way joysticks as analogs through Dave's SJC controller.

The 49 way thing is actually really great., the AKI Analog controllers are great too.  Also, the keywiz is nice, I remember buying KE24 for like $99 way back in the day, so it's really cool to see lower prices on those.

I guess there are a few things I missed, but...

I do still miss how it seemed every month there was a new, absolutely amazing revolutionary product or cab design coming out.  ..   I got spoiled on that stuff I guess :)

well if your looking for a revolutionary cab design, you can take a look at pixelhuggers mission control, the curves really step away from usual boxy arcade like cabinets.  look over in the project announcements.
