Title: What are the best NES and SNES emulators for windows?
Post by: Arcade82 on February 09, 2005, 01:08:34 am
I'm sure it's been asked before but I really need to ask this again for the most recent answers

what do you all use? I really need a good one that plays like the original NES and for SNES something that I can blow up to full screen without looking like crap.

NES = VirtuaNES
SNES = ZSNES

For NES, I like FCE Ultra.  There is an arcade-friendly version at:

VirtauNes is also very good - arcade-friendly version is at:
http://www.screenshotarchive.com/downloads_emus.htm

Only real drawbacks to VirtuaNES is it's a little fussier about ROM headers (might be a good thing), and it has a small line that says "Starting Emulation" when first launced (might not happen from the command line, dunno . . .

For SNES, I agree on ZSNES - again, arcade friendly version is at:

I know others who really like SNES9X, but I preferred ZSNES, although I can't remember why anymore.

Thanks all
what are the best settings for a PC monitor though? Eventually I WILL output these emulators to a TV for my arcade but for my PC what do I want to use as a setting to make it look the best?

I want to change my vote (although I have only tried with Tetris) - Current favorites are:

VirtuaNes
MESS
FCEUltra

I use a PC monitor, to me 640x480 at 8bpp and stretch to full screen looks awesome.
