Title: TikiCade! a pre-announcement & req for opinions & help
Post by: quarterback on February 04, 2005, 01:39:15 am
Okay, this isn't my official project announcement because I'm just working on my artwork now while waiting for some more hardware.

Woke up WAY too early. Needed something to do and saw your post. Searched for Tiki-themed fonts myself and really wasn't coming up with much. What you have looks good so I figured I'd just redraw it in illustrator. The plain logo can be found at:

Most programs can import and work with EPS files just fine. I had to take a few creative liberties since I only had the low-res preview from here to work with.

Looks very close to the Kahlua font:

Mmmmmm...Kahlua!

Great theme, can't wait to see the progress.
How about covering the outside of the cab with bamboo!

Good luck

What is a "cade"?

Totally agree.  Why does it have to look like an arcade cabinet?  Built it into a Tiki statue!  Use the LED lights to trigger the eyes to glow or something.  OR cover the outside in fake stone.  Have fun with it!

Why not have "Tiki Cade" done in flame?  IMO, it wouldn't clash colorwise and it would give it more that "headhunter" type feel.....

Well here's my opinion (basically repeating myself here):
The reds/orange/yellow is all good in the background. Don't change the water. It's not necessary. The only thing I think it needs is a bit of "pop" to the name itself because right now it blends into the background a bit too much. You don't even need to go as far as I did in my tweak up there. Maybe somewhere inbetween.

I definitely agree there should be more contrast. I didn't want to change things too much without some discussion though. It's hard to do things in a Tiki style without mostly sticking to warm colors. Perhaps the type should be a lighter color to contrast with the darker red and black in the background. below are a couple examples of what I'm thinking.

I'm pretty impressed with what you made using only that logo. In my class of 30 budding graphic designers, probably half of them couldn't have done something like that when we were creating typefaces.

This has to be one of the fastest moving topics I've ever seen. It helps to have an original concept. Why tiki? Does this match other decor in the room? I'm not criticising, I'm just curious. Personally I think it's quite cool. Are you building your own cabinet or doing a conversion?

I think a hyphen would help at least with the name. I'm not really coming up with much else. Challenge of the Gods? Fun with Tiki? Power of Tiki? Tiki Land (sounds like a cute platform game)?

I'd be glad to help with changes, but my time is a bit limited right now. One reason I posted the EPS right away is that maybe others can do their takes on it as well.

Though I didn't mimick it here, I like the glow and the reflection on RayB's design.

Like the white with the hypen.  Any chance you could email me the pst file?  I'm thinking of doing something similar (south pacific theme).

Thanks,
Todd

White hyphenated version can be downloaded from:

The hyphen is slightly different as I forgot to save last time.  This file is just the type though.

Hey wakerlet, sorry this took me a while to get back to, but I haven't been on BYOAC for a few days.

I'm not against the idea of sending you the background, but, to be honest, I feel a little hesitant right now.

It's nothing personal but, frankly, I feel a personal connection with the "Tiki-Cade" and it would kind of bum me out to think that somebody else had their Tiki-Cade before me, especially if it was based on my font and background.  I've been mentally formulating my 'theme' for a while now and I'm excited that it's a new and original idea, so there's just a little something bothersome to think that I'd actually me making a marquee/cab "like yours" as opposed to you making a marquee/cab "like mine".  Especially since you've already got the logo.  "Hey look, quarterback did his cab just like wakerlet's"

I'm totally willing to share the layout, design, graphics, whatever with everybody but I'd like to actually have my marquee done before I do that.

Just to note, I don't care that Crowquill sent you the eps, it's just the idea of you having my marquee before I have my marquee that gives me pause.  I hope everybody reading this understands where I'm coming from.  I'm not trying to be stingy about this, just give me a couple weeks to get mine worked out and I'll share the wealth

Besides...it can only get better. (Although it's pretty amazing looking now).

That cab should be nice to work with if it's anything like the pic on KLOV. It might depend how big the holes are for the BIG buttons though.
