I tried to make my own and failed miserably, and ended up plain ol' frustrated....I can't seem to justify spending 30 bucks on the cable when all I really want to do is transfer about 10 disks onto my pc. Sooooo......if anyone out there has one and would be willing to 'rent' out their XE1541 cable for a weekend, I'd be eternally grateful.
If you know of someone, send em my way!
Cheers all!
Mike

I have one that I built before.
Are those original diskettes ?
If it is, its mostly protected and it won't run.
Maybe you can just get those programs on the net.
If its data/program that you made or not protected, and you still have the original c64, you can run a terminal program on c64 and Q-Modem Pro/Procomm Plus BBS on the PC and transfer it that way.

Hi Mike ... I am not willing to loan out my cable (use it too much -- I'm in the process of transferring over my entire old collection of C64 diskettes myself), but if you want I would be willing to transfer your disks over for you.

Are you trying to get personal data back or looking for certain games?
I built a computer with a 5 1/4" 1.2 meg drive that you could jumper down to 300 rpm to read commodore, apple, atari, and a few other disks. It run 98, so you can dump with it and copy the dumps over the network.
Takes about 1 min per disk.
Can't remember the name of the program, but it works like a charm, and you don't have to deal with the cranky old commie drives.
(I'll ask my friend who has the computer I built what the program name is tomorrow. He's backing up the 500 or so floppies he had laying around.)
The drives are fairly cheap off ebay. (My friend found 3 in his closet when we found the program last year.)

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't realize that there were still so many commodore die-hards on these boards. Here's what I'm looking to do.
None of the things I'm trying to copy over are old protected games (in which case I could just download them). As lame as this sounds, the games I'm trying to preserve are some really cheesy wrestling sims I wrote (based around the good ol' (rnd)*8+1)) strings). Now I'd love to be able to transfer them onto my pc to be used in a C64 emulator. So I was under the impression that the only way to do that was with this XE1541 cable. Now I'd have to go digging, but I'm not sure if I still have a 64 that works, all I have is my old 1571 drive with the power cable, and the serial cable. Is there some way to connect a C64 to a PC and transfer the files (like thenasty suggested)?
As for buying the cable, and then reselling it on ebay - yeah I could do that, but again that's my last resort because the project itself is so small. That's why I suggested 'renting' a cable from someone, but I can understand why some people wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

Heh... even in this day and age, my PC still has a 5-1/4" drive in it... I'm upgrading my PC this weekend and was considering taking it out... it would be the first PC I've had without one...
I'd like to know the name of this program... I would like to transfer some of my old projects from disk... I wrote a version of the old board game Dark Tower when I was a kid and I think it turned out pretty good... of course I haven't seen it in 15 years so it may not be as good as I remember...

Seriously though! With all of the fancy new games out and coming out, I'm still kind of fond of some of these old C64 games...Plus this was back in the day when I used to spend hours and hours writing programs on the old beast. Anyway, I took the advice of a fellow member and bought a cable from some dude in Sweden. We'll see how it works out...I'm really hoping that my old disks aren't completely pooched after all these years...
