Title: Flyback lightening!!!!!! HELP!
Post by: Apollo on January 27, 2005, 05:26:53 pm
So I've got a new cab, not working and haven't picked it up yet. Apparently it was working a couple of weeks ago. When I plugged it in to see if it was working all I got was big bolts of blue lightening arcing from under the suction cup on the flyback off out to the sides of the tube ( damn scarey ). This isn't really my field of expertise can anyone offer any advice on what needs doing to fix it?
Cheers

Moisture and temperature variation problems to be sure. You need to let this monitor dry out first before doing anything else. Then discharge the monitor's high voltage and pop off the suction cup for a good looksee at the glass around the hole in the tube. Chances are there are arc track marks or if severe enough actual etching of the glass. Get out the 99% rubbing alcohol and a clean terrycloth rag and clean out the etched tracks in the glass around the hole to about 2" radius (no more than that). Now take the rag and the alcohol and clean the hell out of the rubber suction cup (front and back sides). Reassemble after everything is dried and try it out. If the problem wasn't too bad this should cure it. If not you'll have to replace the flyback. There is an outside chance that the high voltage is running too high which is caused by the B+ power supply regulator section of the monitor either being adjusted too high or has bad components in it.

I've got to say that you are an invaluable member of this community Ken Layton...  Without guru's like you, this place wouldn't be half of what it is.

Thank you for your contributions!

Exactly what I was thinking. I wasn't sure where Ken had gained all his knowledge, I looked back through his posts and found out he has worked on arcade monitors since 1976.

Pretty cool...

Thanks very much Ken, ditto the above comments. I have decided to flag it away and concentrate on one cab at a time, lol. Darn this hobby I need a bigger house and a lot more money, he he.
