Title: What're yall using for a coin box?
Post by: pmc on January 22, 2005, 05:42:10 pm
I have a home-built cab and a Ms-Pacman style coin door. I cut a plastic one gallon milk jug in half and then stapled it under the coin mechs (actually, there's one under each of two mechs). As long as there are already coins in the buckets, I get a nice authentic "clinky clink" sound. The jugs are at a 45-degree angle due to cabinet design (i.e., it's not a free-fall to the bottom of the jug).

But the milk jugs have sagged over time (excuse the double entendre

I've been using an empty coffee can. It has that nice tinny sound, even if there's no coins in it.

I probably paid way too much for my coin box but I figured since I was already way OVER budget I might as well spend some extra money and get that authentic sound from my coin box.  My wife thinks I'm crazy but I told her when you put the coins in the slot and there is an empty coin box it has to sound like it did when I was younger or what is the point of building this thing  ;).

Anyway I tried to find a metal box around work and in my garage, also checked with a few friends and could not find one anywhere (everything is plastic these days), so I went online and found one but it cost around $20.00, (I can't help it, I was desperate :-\).  I was going to remove the cover but decided to just leave it open. I made a little platform for it and mounted the platform under the coin door.

I would search around your work or ask someone before spending money on one.  be sure to check the measurements to make sure the coin box will be under both coin slots. Here is the link.

hope this helps.

Couldn't you use a breadpan?  Walmart/Target should have them, otherwise try goodwill/salvation army.  Probably get one there for $0.50

- I just realized there is no "cent symbol" on a keyboard. :o

Go to Home Depot or some other home store and buy a piece of sheet metal.  Cut it in the shape of a cross and fold it up.  Some L brackets and screws should keep the sides together, but Duct tape will do if you don't want to go to those lengths.  Either set it to where it's supposed to rest, or screw it to your cab like you did with your milk jug.

You'll have essentially just made a coin box without a top.

Real coinboxes are only a few bucks at Happs.  http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/cabinetdoors_cashboxes.htm

JEEZ!  Ya, skip all the "other ways" and buy a coin box, ya skinflint!  (or if you drink coffee, go with the can)

I'm using half a plastic jug too. I cut a piece of sheet metal to go in the bottom for that authentic clink sound too. Also when I empty it out I leave half a dozen or so tokens in there to get a nice coin rattle. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that sound to be essential to the true arcade experience.

I am pretty sure that I read that the very first Pong machine that Atari built had a bread pan for a coinbox.

Thanks for all ther responses. I'm going to scope some bread pans and if that doesn't work I'll try a coffee can. Then I might go commercial/official if I don't like what I end up with.

Great ideas here. Luv this board. And I love the homebrew part of cabinet building. Thanks again.
