I finally found an old hard drive to take apart, but it's not looking like the ones in the various instructions I've seen here.
Here are a couple of pics, is this one a lost cause?

you have to take a look at the center of the bearing part on both sides. If it got hole (threaded in top side, bottom is a hole) then it doable.
The top will always be threaded cause thats where the screw came off, but the bottom part is the important one, if it got a hole, its hard to make a hole dead center without destroying it. That bottom hole is where the encoder wheel get glued in.
Its hard to drill a hole, not like a woman where you can drill a hole easily with a little effort and you can even drill it in the dark
