Title: Can you tell the difference between these two?
Post by: DrewKaree on January 20, 2005, 12:32:24 am
Below are two birds.  Study them closely.

See if you can spot which of the two is the female.

It can be done. Even by one with limited bird watching skills.

That's great!

On a related note (sexism), did anyone happen to catch some of the uproar on the coledge profesor or whatever he is who made some comments about women not being as good at math and science...  I'm so sick of people trying to defend their race/sex/whatever against the statistical facts!  I saw some biotch on like CNN or something saying that if math was tought in a way that women can more relate to that they would succeed more.

Ugh, it makes me so mad!  Why can't we just acgnoledge the FACT that men, as a group, are better than women, as a group, at math?  I never hear anone debating the fact that women are better at expressing their feelings...

I don't think it has anything to do with genetics.  I think it's more a case where women are discouraged and expected to be bad at math from a very early age.

My unscientific case studies:

A daughter of a family friend is a math wiz and just got a BA in math.

My wife's cousin (female) has a physics BA and can calculate circles around anyone I know.

My wife needed a math credit to get a BA in German.  She's already got a BA in genetics (lotta math there including trig and calculus).  So she took a winter session freshman algebra class to get it over with fast.  This was really easy almost highschool-level stuff.  She averaged 100%.  The rest of the class (real college freshmen) averaged somewhere around 60%.

I think the case of my wife really illustrates the problem is environment.  These kids she took the class with have absolutely terrible basic math skills and could not grasp even the simplest algebra concepts because they didn't get a decent highschool education.  That's partly due to the fact that they got a terrible gradeschool education.

My wife has been teaching highschool science the past 5 years.  Every time I help her grade tests it depresses me.  Kids that transfer in from other countries (even Mexico) are so much better prepared for high school level learning than Americans.

There's nothing wrong with the female brain and I don't think it's too terribly different when it comes to learning.

On a purely genetic level, men are pre-disposed to spacial oriented tasks (driving ;D) whereas women are pre-disposed to verbal and language skills (talking) Girls will often start talking sooner than boys and use bigger words and more of them throughout development.  Not sure where math falls in there though.

Oh yeah, also, a woman's brain is typically better at multitasking than a man's but since the man can only do one job at a time, it doesn't help her that she thinks of 3 other things for him to do  ;D

Menace, you hit that one squarely on the head!  Especially with our second childe due on Feb 14th.  The nesting instinct has kicked into hyperdrive!

I'd like to comment on the men being better at math and sciences than women.

A friend of my brother-in-law's said that at a family brunch when the woman folk were complaining about men not knowing how easy they have it.  I figured the quote would be appreciated in this thread.

This guy also left his wife's side in the hospital while she was in labor for 16 hours, to get her breath mints.

His, she didn't even know why he left until he offered them to her.

He is the reason I'll never underestimate the ignorance of an @ss.  When I think he can't do any worse he does.

It should be like the old days where a chick just wondered into the fields, pushed aside some straw, yelled a couple of times and then came home with baby to cook the man his grilled mammoth.
