Ive got my monitor out of my cabinet while I laminate and paint. So I thought It would be a good time to clean up the monitor the electronics are all covered with a black film that cant be blown off. What is the best way to get this off without trying to simply rub it off.

Use an ordinary (and clean) 1" wide paint brush to knock all that dirt free then blow it off with an air compressor. Be careful around the convergence rings on the neck of the tube. There is where I use a half inch wide paint brush to knock the dirt loose.

I thought I remember seeing somesort of spray solvent for cleaning electronics.
I think it was at radioshack. I dont know what its called but would I be able to use something like that?

The cleaning spray you are probably thinking of is Radio Shaft # 64-4327 Precision Electronics Cleaner spray. It costs around $12 a can, but may be priced considerably higher in states with 'environmental' surcharges tacked on.

thats what I was thinking of. How would it work? this stuff isnt really coming off with a brush.

Electronics "cleaner/degreaser" types of spray come blasting out to give your board a penetrating bath in solvents that evaporate quickly without leaving a residue. They are NOT intended for spraying on live (energised) circuitry as the solvents are flammable!

And of course, no one here would think about doing this while the monitor is plugged in, right?
Right?
What I've done is pull the boards, bring them to the sink, and hose them down. Spray it with a gentle degreaser, wait a few minutes, and hose down again.
All the while, the oven has been preheating @ 150 degrees. Once you're done washing, turn the oven OFF. Get the hair dryer out, and blow the heck out of the board. Then put the board in the oven, and go away. Come back in three hours.

I'd just use the hair dryer myself.

Just the hairdryer won't be enough. You want the remaining water that's on (and in) the board to evaporate. You want it *gone.*
