Title: World Class Bowling
Post by: the3eyedblindman on January 18, 2005, 12:34:11 am
I had mame.87 mame32 on this computer i believe a few months ago with the same rom set, and world class bowling worked. Now, on my arcade computer, I have mame.89 mame32, and world class bowling doesnt run and says i have missing roms, even though its the same rom set as this computer, just an older version of mame, whats going on?

ROM sets need to match the version of MAME

Let me translate this for you... your Mame32 version needs to match the romset version

Does the mame version need to match EXACTLY?

Let's say you have rom sets in version 0.80
I can understand running mame 0.90 and not having games working.

What if you ran mame version 0.70?

For the most part the answer is yes.  If a driver changes and the ROMS are repacked then it will have issues playing whichever ROM. As new releases of MAME come out you will notice driver changes which will often promote some games from not working to working and at the same time take working games and make them non-working. With this said, MAME versions are not backwards compatible.

You may be able to get some ROMS to work with say MAMEv80 from a v70 ROMSET, but you'd be lucky and certainly would not have a complete set of working ROMS. But this is why there are things like CLRMAME, etc

If the ROM names change from release to release, you'll have the problem of it not finding the ROM, and it won't load.

Sometimes the ROMs get redumped, and you have a better copy of it.  You can use that ROM on an older version, but it will complain about CRCs or whatnot not matching, but it should still run.

And sometimes, ROMs get added.  A recent example of this is Crystal Castles, which had some PROMs added.

This is why whenever you change to a new version of mame run romcenter or clrmame to verify your roms.
