Title: BYOC People Finder (USA)
Post by: missioncontrol on January 14, 2005, 04:34:38 pm
Just out of curiosity how come there are not that many people from the USA listed in the people finder link above?

I have tried.  It sends info through email.  Since I only use hotmail, it does not work for me.  Anyone want to submit my info for me?

I was always wondering why so FEW people add any location to their profile here?  Thats even easier to do, and alot quicker for other people to find.  I am probably the only one, but when I see someone with a problem I know I can fix, the first thing I do is check to see if they are local.

Hey stevejt, try this:
Type up an email in Hotmail with the subject line of "Form posted from Microsoft Internet Explorer." (no quotes) and the following information in the body of the email.

Quote
NICK=<type your BYOAC nickname here>
COUNTY= <this is the county, not countRy you live in>
STATE= <what State in the U.S.>
EMAIL=Email (OPTIONAL)
ADDITIONAL=Additional Info (OPTIONAL)

Replace the stuff in red with your own information and email it to MrArcade@woh.rr.com

If you'd like, replace the Email and Additional Info with the corresponding information.

I never knew it existed either.  Just added myself to the list.

There has been a BYOAC People finder link at the top of the forum web pages since these forums started (its right next to Chatroom link).

BTW: I doubt it will get updated anytime soon as Mr.Arcade has had a falling out with some BYOAC people due to financial hardships.

If this is something we would like to keep up, I'm willing to take up the task of hosting the tool and maintaining it. I'd ask Mr. Arcade, but I hear that he is very hard to make contact with these days.

I don't think it'd be very hard to actually have other countries as well so we have a world wide view. I'd break it down by city / state / country instead of just by county / state.

At this point this thread should probably be in board discussion, but tonight I'll start building an interface. I'm not sure if it needs maps, but will see what I can put together.

I ran out of time last night, so I will work on this tonight. I already have a functioning version, but it needs alot of cleanup. When it is first available it will be very similar to what Mr. Arcade had done. I will then cleanup some stuff and throw in some graphics to spiff it up.

I'll be looking for some arcade style fonts and ideas for themes.  If you have any suggestions, please feel free to post here or PM me.

Thanks,

I have also been looking at how to replace this feature. I would prefer to host it locally on byoac so we don't have external dependencies. All I have at the moment is USA map to go off of, but perhaps we can, with other users help, get this to a worldwide system.

ok, I'll back off

I had already depuplicated Mr. Arcades efforts and cleaned up a bit and added support for other countries, but was considering dropping the maps.

Woogie, if you want to keep it on the BYOAC host and want help, let me know.

I've got a version of it up and runnnig, but it isn't very special. It is a modified version of Mr. Arcades but I'm holding off as Woogie wants it to be something locally hosted to this board. Unfortunately what I have now is what Mr. Arcade was doing which is a person completes the online form which emails him and he manually edits the HTML for the area / region by county. I have NAME, COUNTRY, STATE, CITY as the fields.

In an idead world instead of this being a manual process it would be database driven so that a user submiits their info and it would be updated on the screen automatically. I'm sure I can do this, but I don't  have access to the BYOAC host and wouldn't want it as it is too much liability. I am willing to host and update / maintain what i've got currently and then work on putting together a better solution.

I had pretty much put something together very similar to what Mr. Arcade had did and it could be finished in an hour or so, but They wanted something to be on the BYOAC host. So I stopped.

Well, since that isn't happening, why not finish yours and then once a BYOAC-hosted solution is available you could work out a data export?

Ok, I've got a couple of different approaches to a solution.

One of them is a modified version of Mr. Arcades which incorporates different tree's for different countries.

Another which I think is a better solution and allows for user accts for web administration is a modified version of PML which is a free license web DB for cataloging movies. I have redone fields to match our needs and it supports the use of pictures that can be submitted to go in a profile type view as suggested in this  thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,32080.0.html) You can view this version  HERE (http://perfectidiot.com/people1/list.php?Active=UnitedStates&). If this turns out to be what we use, there are quite a few enhancements that will be done and improvements made to design.

I would appreciate any feedback on the use of this.

Thanks,

I didnt want to enter all of the data from the old people finder into the MySQL database unless we were sure this is what we were going to use. I added just the Californians that are already in the current people finder.

Again any feedback is appreciated.

Maybe we're taking the wrong approach to this.

Most of the information we need is right in the existing BYOAC profile... if we could just get people to fill out their location and have an easy way of listing by location, we wouldn't need a separate databse.  Of course, location would need to be separated into City, State, and Country to make them searchable or sortable....

That would be more simple to implement.

I was also considering hosting some games and a chat feature if enough interest existed. But again if there is enough interest, they could be done here as well.

I don't want to speak for Saint, but he has shot down the idea of hosting games in the past.  ShivaSite (http://www.shivasite.com), which is one of the Visual Pinball sites, has an extensive online arcade, and since there are probably plenty of pinball fans here that might be a good place for BYOACers to hang out and compete...

If / When it is decided, I can resume working on what I have done or not depending on what the powers that be may want. Until then, I will go back to being busy with other stuff.

What I like about it is that it is easily administrated from the same GUI. Superusers can add new lists, add entries, delete, modify, etc. Right now the one that Mr. Arcade put together is hosed, because he is no longer involved. With this you can set all mods as super users or a group of people who can do the updates. I've created a web mail acct so requests to be added could again be done by anyone who has access to the web acct.

Peale,

Currenlty it isn't automatic.

user info currently needs to be added by a superuser / admin.

I had only added the California members from the current system as a test.

I can of course start adding people if this is what the community / mods / saint wants.

If interested in being added send an email with name, country, state, city, a picture if you want it listed and any website or personal info you want shown to peoplefinder@perfectidiot.com

Title: Re: BYOC People Finder (USA)

I was lead to believe that my interim attempt wasn't what was ideally wanted by mods and a few users.

It seems that something hosted on the same server as the BYOAC and possibly integrated with the MYSQL DB that the forums use to populate the location info is what is wanted.

I backed away.... I could easily resume; but its futile if its not what the MODs, Saint, and the masses want.

Smashing idea... fresh start... makes quick work. It is configurable to have super users with admin privs

I may take you up on the offer.

Things are slow on my front as I'm moving homes in a few weeks from now. Very consuming process, and work isn't being a slouch either. All these great things are swimming in my head, but not done yet. Grr. :)

I'd like to see where you're going. Feeds of a stripped user database from the forum would be ideal as they enter that info there anyway. I can provide that if necessary.

Yeah, best route.  Location info can already be stored, just need a way to search/visualize it.
