Title: Heat problems with a computer mounted in a CP?
Post by: JonnyBoy on January 14, 2005, 12:03:14 am
As of right now my design is based on putting a motherboard, hard drive, etc. inside of a control panel. My main concern is the wood acting as an insulator and all that. Do you think that the heatsink and 1 intake and 1 outtake fan will be enough to keep the box cool? Any other suggestions for keeping the temperature within reasonable levels?

Depends on the layout of all the components and how close they are to each other I guess.

You could look into cooling for your hard drive, something like this:

Hope this helps you out.

Liquid cooling, with the tubes and reservoir hanging out of the CP would be cool. (Pun intended).

That way you wouldn't have to explain MAME to anyone because the question of the day would be "What's all that glowing tubing hanging out of your joystick for?".

I guess it would depend on your hardware also.  What kind of processor are you going to be running?  Are you using a power supply with a fan?

I'm running that cheap PCChips mobo with a 1.6 ghz Duron. I haven' purchased a power supply yet but will most likely get one with a fan. Will I be okay with the heatsink/fan, power source fan, and 1 outtake and intake fan mounted on the back of the CP?

I can't really help you out, but, just out of curiosity, why would you want to put your PC in your CP (pun intended)???? Just being curious...

I don't think this will pose a problem....I think the quantity of fans you are describing will be sufficient airflow to displace the heat .

Of course, placement of those will determine how much air they move.

I think his design is to build a portable Control Panel rather than a full cabinet. Of course, I could be wrong.  ;D

A duron 1600 and a PC chips mobo should be okay with a single fan in as well as the power supply outlet fan. Just ensure the inlet/outlet are at opposite ends to give good airflow.

Just to be safe try out the following program called Motherboard Monitor.

http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

If your running windows it will put 2 small temperature icons on your taskbar with real time monitoring and it doesn't take up a lot of memory neither. It's usually used by overclockers as it saves going into the hardware monitor in the Bios. if you start heading towrds the mid/high 50C's then you need to put in a bit more cooling.

I would get 2 very quiet fans.  One to bring in good air and on to take out the hotter air.

Silenx makes super quiet fans.

Def look at the dB rating on the fans you need.  Lower dB = quieter.

Look for Papst brand fans.  I ordered a few for a project but I had to order them from some Dutch website.  They are the quiest case fans I have ever seen.  12dba.

Prolly same thing I'm working on - portable MAME party box.

Ever have someone ask you to bring your cab over to their party?  Which would be less cumbersome?  MAME party box (CP MAME) or your entire big honkin' cab?

I'm looking for some Pabst brand fans (hey, I'll jump on the pun intended bandwagon).  I keep opening up the metal cylindrical cases, but I haven't found any fans yet. ;D

I just quieted my noisy box with 80 mm Nexus case fans (17.6 dba).
Got 'em at EndPCNoise.com (http://www.endpcnoise.com/)

Since you like Pabst - ever have a Blatz?

Two distinctly Wisconsin brews....something to do with kreusening or whatnot.

Pabst - The best cheap beer to get drunk on.  EVER.

I thought Blatz was a made up name... didn't know it was real!!

Blatz - Gold colored can with shite brown lettering.  Big fricken upside down UPS Butt-ugly BrownTM with "Blatz" in cursive plastered across it.

If you seriously like Pabst, I can almost guarantee you'll like Blatz, although the stuff might be pretty rare outside of Wisconsin.

Leinenkugel's makes two PHAT ones around this time of year - Double Butt and Big Butt - but if they don't carry it on tap, don't waste your time.  It even sucks out of the bottle.

Want something nice to throw you for a quick loop?  Spaten Optimator, or Salvatore...fairly similar, and they go down so well, I'm well greased by the time I realize I've drunk too many of 'em  ;D  If you can find either of those on tap, you should make that your new favorite bar and stop looking.  If you can't find 'em....road trip over here and I'll take you out for a few on tap....I take NO responsibility for what you do after two or twelve three of those going down your gullet  ;D

For those of you who are Miller Light piss drinkers, I don't suggest you even whiff the bottle cap of any of those beers I recommended.  You may not even be able to stagger to a chair before passing out and splitting your head open  ;)

having the duct go to right above your cpu

Throw a quiet 80 MM blowing in on the left, and a 80mm pulling out on the right..
