Title: Spinner Settings
Post by: psikey on January 13, 2005, 10:23:23 am
First off, if this has been asked before, I apologize (I searched but didn't come up with anything). My daughter has caught the Arcade bug. She absolutely loves games like arkanoid. My cab has a USB Slik Stik Tornado spinner. On Arkanoid (Which by the way I can't stand) there seems to be a little lag when the spinner is engaged. I've tried messing around with the MAME settings to try to find that "happy place" but nothing that satisfies me. Is there a certain procedure that anyone uses to tweak it (i.e. I don't want to change more than one thing at a time, adjust sensitivity, try it, adjust digital speed, try it) or if anybody would care to offer up their prime settings for arkanoid that would be appreciated. Thanks for the feedback.

thats the only option that everyone is doing, TRY it and see how it feels/behave to your liking, if still no good, adjust it again and again and again until you do find that HAPPY PLACE :).
Until now, I still have not found that PERFECT HAPPY PLACE but I can deal with it as it is.

Maybe if you use the TRUE ARKANOID spinner. Those SPINNERS are geared not free/spinng like the TORNADO.

That's really the issue. I have a Tornado too. You'll never get a Tornado to feel right in Arkanoid, it's not the right control for the game.

why isn't it?  This doesn't make sense to me.

Tornados have weight but the gear shouldn't made a difference other then its geared to more detail.

When you turn it left... does it take a second to register the left in the mouse?
(if yes.... take it apart and make sure that the encoder wheel moves when you move it...)..

or when moving left and you grab it and start moving right... it takes a second.  Because the additional time is probalby just the weight.

btw, real arkanoid spinners go on ebay for about 10 bucks if you watch for a few weeks... I passed on one last night that went for 10.

I know the difference between them...

but where would the

"a little lag" come from?

weight makes more work to change directions...  Is this the lag hes talking about was my question.

because if you get "a little lag" when moving slowly... you have a different problem then its the wrong type of spinner.

Is there any lag in windows desktop?  If yes, you need to tweek windows instead of just mame.

I don't think it's the Tornado.  I experience the same thing with all of my analog controls.  I have tried just about everything for settings to get around it.  It is *very* noticable in Arkanoid.  It's a very short, but noticable delay between moving, for example, the spinner and having it happen on screen.  Just curious, what do you use for hooking up the spinner?  Mouse hack, OptiPac, etc?

Just using USB directly into the computer. have an opti-pac for the trackball, but couldn't work up the courage to hack a $90 spinner. I think everyone who has posted has legitimate answers. The spinner IS brilliant in tempest, but not in Arkanoid. What other games are out there I can test it out on? Thanks for all the feedback!

I hear ya.

I have 2 Tornados.  I just got 2 OSCAR Controls optic boards $7.50 each and I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount them on the tornados so I can hook them up to my Opti-PAC.

The screw holes on the oscar boards don't really line up with the tornado mounting holes so it might take a little creativity.

I'll post some pictures when I get the optic boards mounted.

Krick,

Have you tried foam tape?
I don't know if there's anywhere to hook it to on the Tornado, but that's what I've used on several steering wheel/spinner setups I've done with the Oscar boards.

I have an OptiPac also.   So you have a USB version?  It's very possible it's a MAME thing.  I thought I read somewhere (maybe Aaron Giles' page) that the input system wasn't perfect and he was hoping to revamp it.  Maybe that might have something to do with it.

I definitely notice it on 2 games, Arkanoid and Centipede.  Haven't really paid attention to the other games.

Because you just get a heavier "feel" with a geared spinner than you do with one that spins freely. The Tornado is brilliant in Tempest, but feels wrong in Arkanoid. Maybe this is just my opinion.

I also have had no luck adjusting the analog settings for Arkanoid with my Tornado.

Have you tried increasing the sensitivity to around 150%?  The spinners I used to play it with moved across the screen without having to turn the spinner much.  Maybe they were geared to increase the spin of the optic wheel in relation to the spinner knob.  Increasing the sensitivity has worked well for me.

Can't you just go and adjust your mouse settings in control panel in windows?
