Title: Step-by-step how-to: wiring coin door power through J-PAC
Post by: krick on January 12, 2005, 02:19:25 pm: I have a JAMMA wired cabinet running a MAME computer hooked up via J-PAC.

I was looking into wiring up my coin door lighting and I was wondering if anyone has tried modifying their J-PAC to provide +12v through the JAMMA harness.

If you look closely at the edge connectors on the J-PAC, all the power contacts are not electrically connected to the rest of the J-PAC.

I think it would be possible to solder a +12v lead to the edge of the correct edge connector.

Since when have I ever done anything the easy way. ;)

I just think it would be cleaner and more professional looking to use the wiring that's already present in the JAMMA harness instead of running even more wire.

I've been doing a little research on the JAMMA specification and the only mention I can find about coin door power is by Bob Roberts in his article on how to wire a JAMMA harness...

He uses wire "F" in the jamma harness as a "12v out" to the coin door.

Is this the "standard" way that JAMMA harnesses are connected?
i.e. is the "F" JAMMA wire usually used for power to the coin door?

Post by: moonpatrol 4 lyfe on January 14, 2005, 10:16:24 am: If you wanted to spend the money, you could make a pass through connector from some jamma edge connectors, and then pick and choose what wires you want from the JPAC into the arcade machine. Jake sure that the arcade harness isn't sending 12 Volts to places that need lesser voltages.

Post by: krick on January 14, 2005, 10:25:21 am: Actually, I already figured out a simple, easily reversible modification to the J-PAC to allow it to supply coin door power. Now, my only problem is figuring out which JAMMA wire to use.

According to Bob Roberts, he wires up the JAMMA harness with wire "F" sending +12v to the coin door.

However, in looking at the JAMMA harness in my cabinet, it looks like "C" and "4" also go to the coin door but with +5V each.

Is there any kind of standard?

I don't see the point of using JAMMA to wire up cabinet lights... Lights are pretty much a basic cabinet feature regardless if it is JAMMA or some other format.

That only works if your cabinet still has a PSU. Mine doesn't. I disconnected it when I removed the arcade game and put in the MAME computer.

Though, you can tap 12V off of the computer's PSU if you like.

Another good option is to wire up a transformer between the marquee power and the coin door lights that changes the voltage from 120AC to 12VDC (or whatever your lights need).
