Title: Control Panel wood thickness?
Post by: D00kie on October 14, 2002, 12:16:10 pm
Does anyone have any recomendations for wood thickness for the super 8 joysticks?  I have left over 3/4" wood from the cabinet but i thought someone was saying that is to thick for the controls.  Any suggestions?

I was planning on using 3/4" for the panel myself...I don't see any reason what not...If it's left over, cut it to size and drill some holes in it, then place the joystick and buttons in it.  If they look like they are going to fit, your money :)

I used 1/2" mdf with 1/4" lexan on top and I am really happy with the depth.  Nice and sturdy too.

Is the lexan easy to cut holes into?  Did you smooth the edges of the lexan or just have the t molding cover it

The lexan isn't too difficult to cut through.  I first cut all my holes in the wood then cut the lexan to size.  I then mounted the lexan onto the cp before drilling the holes in the lexan.  This'll make sure that everything will line up perfectly.  I don't trust clamps.  Then I just used the same bit I used to cut the wood to cut through the lexan.  It take REALLY long to do this...and you must go slowly.  But the outcome looks amazing.  Just use your holes in the cp as a guide and you'll be fine.

and having a 3/4" total did not make your joysticks not work properly?  What kind of joysticks do you have?

I have Happ Super joysticks in a 3/4" MDF panel covered with laminate.  The laminte is probably 1/16" thick.  Joysticks work fine.  I think "standard" thickness for a wood panel is 3/4.  It seems most of the cabs use 3/4 particle board when they use wood.  The Super's come with a piece for a metal control panel, but metal panesl are probably only 1/8" thick, AFAIK.

I have Happ Ultimate sticks... I used 5/8" wood (actually meant to be a shelf) with 1/8" lucite on top.  3/4" T-molding across the front of the panel covers both the wood and the lucite perfectly.

I have tried Super, competition, and J-stcik on 3/4 in wood with lexan....

Competition has longest shaft.... Super and J-stick (ball top) is more or less the same....

its playable, but if you're used to long shafts... you might want to route a little on the bottom... that will fix the pblm....

so, if you have 3/4" wood left over, just use it.... and try.... nothing much to lose except some time....
