Title: lookin into buying a domain/webspace
Post by: Sephroth57 on January 11, 2005, 01:25:35 pm
I want to have a personal site, nothing really fancy. Just so i can put up videos/pictures and make a little webpage without the restrictions from the free providers.

I only want to spend liek 5-10$ a month, and i know even for that little theres some decent providers out there. anyone have any suggestions? I probably wont need more than like 500MB - 1 gig of space, not sure on the bandwith but its not like im gonna have a ton of people lookin at my site

I've been using Globat (http://affiliates.globat.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=joymonkey) (that's my affiliate link), they offer 2.5gigs of storage and 75gb of bandwidth for $8 a month, but they're always having sales- right now they're offering it for $1.99 a month.

If you want, I could give you some space at joymonkey.com/~sephroth , or maybe a sub-domain.

Edit: They also have a 30 day money-back guarantee. They'll register a domain for you too for $12.

i checked out all those sites, the globeat one to get the 1.99 a month deal, you gotta pay a 30$ setup fee and when it comes down to it its 53$ to get started but you have 6 months paid,

the 1and1.com comes out to like 30$ because you have to pay the first 6 months up front.

is there anything that will just cost me like 5$ now, now like 50$ now.

If you want something with a ton of features but still pretty cheap, check out Lunarpages.com

They have plans for $7.95 and $22.95 a month.

Kevin Steele hosts RetroBlast.com there.

When I joined they were having a 'no setup fee' sale, so I avoided that. You could wait and see what their next sale is (they seem to have one every week).

I think that most hosts require you to pay the first year in advance, all advertised rates always seem to assume you'll be doing a one year program.

As I said, I can give you some of my space for nothing, but then you wouldn't have the nice domain.

That's pretty much how it works. I don't think you'd be able to upload from the website, but you can use an FTP program no problem.
All FTP accounts created under joymonkey.com create web addresses like joymonkey.com/~whatever , but if you'd prefer a subdomain like whatever.joymonkey.com I can set one up that forwards to joymonkey.com/~whatever

Sorry, I know that sounds a little confusing.

Shoot me a PM (with whatever user and password you'd like) and I'll set you up an FTP account if you want to try it out.

Wow! Great deal! Best o' luck with the site. I wish Globat.com (http://affiliates.globat.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=joymonkey) gave me promotional codes like that  :P

As soon as Globat (http://affiliates.globat.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=joymonkey)'s $1.99 sale ended, they started a $1 for 3 months with no setup fee offer, but you'd still end up paying $75 for a year (which isn't bad considering I paid the full $96 and thought I was getting a sweet deal)

[/end of gratuitous affliate links]

ah so you're druid =)

yep. until the begging of march, you get 2400MB webspace, free domain name, 15 subdomains, and 120GB/mon transfer all for 10USD for the first year.

If I had something I needed a website for, I'd have used this too. Too bad =(

Oh well, cheers everyone!

(BTW the promotion code is 777 - for their seventh year anniversary)
