Title: Just when I thought I had the whole rom thing figgured out...
Post by: crashwg on January 10, 2005, 08:05:18 pm
Ok, so what's up with genesis roms and the multiple dates?

I see things like...
Tecmo Super Bowl (U) (Oct 1993) [!].bin
Tecmo Super Bowl (U) (Sep 1993) [!].bin

and
F-22 Interceptor (U) (Jun 1992) [c][!].bin
F-22 Interceptor (U) (Sep 1991) [a1][c][!].bin
F-22 Interceptor (U) (Sep 1991) [c][!].bin

Did Sega release the roms multiple times?  Did they change stuff?  What?  Going through my collection I have just used the youngest date, is that a bad idea?

Oh yea and what's with the [p] string?  Pirate?  Aren't all roms Pirate?

Yea, I know all those already.  They have been brought up many a time before on these forums.  That still doesn't explain the dates, and who decides wheter a rom is pirate or not... :P

Mario Brothers rom dumped from official cartridge with the Nintendo license = not pirate

Mario Brothers rom dumped from some odd looking cartridge found on the streets of Hong Kong = pirate

The date is simply the date of the rom on the cartridge. Different versions will have different dates.

Well duh...  Stupid me!  I can't believe I didn't think of that.  It makes so much better sense now.
