Title: 1000 ft of CAT5 cable for $30 at Frys
Post by: Beeeph on January 10, 2005, 01:17:37 pm
Frys is selling 1000ft spindles of CAT5 four twisted pair 26 awg for $29.99 right now.  That equates to 8000 ft of electrical wire.  You'll never have to buy electrical wire to wire your controls for the rest of your life.

Is it the stranded patch cable stock, or the solid-core stuff?  It's a great price either way, but the stranded stuff is easier to work with.

Is there even such a thing as stranded wire in CAT5?  I can't see how it would work, taking into account how RJ45 ends are crimped on.

So, yea, it has to be solid core wire if it's CAT5.

Nope, they make both.  The stranded stock is made specifically for making patch cords, as it can handle the flexing patch cables will have to take.  The stranded stock is preferred for MAME applications.  A quick search turned up:

For whatever it's worth.  www.compgeeks.com always has 1k ft of Cat5 with a tester for $39

or just the cable and crimper for $18

Both solid cable and I don't know what shipping would be to you but as I said, always that price.

I just got this kit and I'm pretty impressed with it (for the price).  The cable is decent solid-core wire and the crimper works pretty well considering how cheap it is.  For those of you building modular controls, they've got a 24-port cat5 jack panel (19" rackmount).  Or at least they did recently.  I can't seem to find it on their site now, but it was in the $16-18 range also.
