Title: What's the best way to install a PC monitor in this CAB?
Post by: Jabba on January 09, 2005, 08:33:56 pm
A couple of questions for you guys if you don't mind.

I bought a used empty cabinet for $25.
I want to mount a monitor in this puppy so it looks like an original.
As you can see from the picture, the monitor will need to go in at an extreme angle (something like at a 20 degree angle) and I cannot really build a horizontal shelf to place the monitor on.

I am sure someone here has done this already. Anyone have any ideas? I would prefer not to take the PC monitor casing off as this is for my brother. I was thinking of talking a sheet of plywood and cutting a hole in it but I am not sure the best way to secure the plastic PC minotor casing to the plywood, nor how to get the monitor flush with the glass.

Also, anyone have any idea what this was originally? It had a hacked up control panel on it that someone made previously as a mod.

Any links or suggestions are muchly appreciated.

I'd have to say... so you can see it through that big hole.

But really, I think we'd need more pictures to figure it out.

Hey thrdbace,

Thanks for the info. I checked out your post. Nice cab BTW. Looks like you have access to some nice tools there. I think I saw a drillpress and a couple of other nice tools. I assume these are NOT in your apartment

Haha,

Yes, the arrow you point to is a horizontal piece of 2x4 that is at the "angle" of the monitor....those two legs that support this horizontal piece have been cut at the angle as well obviously.

So the monitor sits on that, then there is a piece along the front edge of the monitore, where the power button is, that keeps it from falling forward.  Nothing in the back, but...i put more 2x4 rails in between the monitor and the sides of the cabinet to keep it from moving around - thats it...

yes, its pretty stable, i played golden tee tonight, not much shaking or anything...i can forsee some sort of bungee cord wrapped tight around the back of the monitor and to some hooks....

But again, the back of my cabinet is like 50% UNENCLOSED, so the monitor can slide right back out of the caibinet when i need to move it a long distance.

Thanks for the comments...my cab isnt perfect, but its mine, and an ABSOLUTE joy to build - i had a blast!

my semi-retired father has the tools, what a great shop he has down there....that bastard

Thanks trdbace,

A quick question...

"i put more 2x4 rails in between the monitor and the sides of the cabinet to keep it from moving around - thats it..."

Are these used to keep the monitor from moving side-to-side?

Does anyone else have any other ideas on this? Are there other ways people have mounted their monitors this way?

Thanks again

Exactly - although i think some would say i took the easy way out - my monitor weighs like 80lbs or something, it isn't going anywhere...

You're going to have an absolute blast making your own machine...good luck

Echo25: Wow! That CAB looks GREAT! It looks likes the one I have is the exact same cabinet as yours. Nice job. The before and after pics really show the work that went into it. I like what you did with the control panel. The cabinet I am working with came with a metal control panel that looked like it had been badly MAMED. I am rebuilding a wood two player, 4 button CP with a Ultimarc Trackball. Hope it all fits...

This cab is on my brother's budget so I'll probably add just a little bit of artwork to it (still trying to convince him...).

thrdbase: Thanks for that. BTW...Which cab is perfect? Thats the beauty of this hobby, always ways to improve what you did last... I built my first a year ago, and am still tinkering with it...

What size monitor are you putting in there?

I am looking at either a 17" or a 19"...

Why do you ask?

Just curious mostly.  Both of those will have a tube size smaller than an arcade monitor (a 21" is the same size as a 19" arcade monitor), so you want to make sure that you center it up well and secure the sides.

I have one of those in the basement (mine was a Berzerk, so it has a front door). I was considering shoehorning a big 25" or 27" monitor in vertically.

Mine sits back at a pretty extreme angle too. I took a PC monitor out of it's case and found that it had a metal lip around the outside edge that's about 1/2 inch wide. The monitor slipped right into the hole vacated by the dead arcade monitor that was in my cab when I bought it and I just screwed it into place. Here's a not very good picture of the cab when it was still very much a work in progress.
