Title: Got a degausing wand - um, how do I use it?
Post by: mattv on January 09, 2005, 07:12:36 pm
My monitor has a a large purpilish discolouration in the bottom right corner and a smaller discoluration in the top left corner. Waving a magnet around in front of it moves the blobs around but doesn't get rid of them, so I'm sure that what my monitor needs is a damn good degausing.

By happy coincidence the electronics store down the road have dropped all their CRT products and have been dumping their reminig stock at silly prices and I picked up a brand spanking new degausing wand for $50 (about $25 USD) which I thought was not too bad.

Anyway, the point is that I have a degausing wand, and I have a tube which needs to be degaused, I have no clue how to use the wand and I don't want to make things worse than they already are.

So any help would be appreciated. Do I just wave the wand round in front of the screen, or do I have to make circles in front of it or something, or stand back and power it up, then move towards the screen, then away then power it off? Google is pretty much useless so I was hoping someone could help me out with some instructions.

Thanks very much

I thought putting a magnet to a screen totally messes it up?

What kind on monitor are you using? Most monitors have built in degaussing colis which should work better than your degaussing wand. If the built in coil isn't working then the problem will just come back and you can't just use your wand on it all the time ( it's not good for most monitors ).
Anyway, start with the wand approx 6 inches from the screen. Turn it on then walk away slowly till you are approx 10 feet away while making ever increasing circular motions with the wand. When you are 10 feet away you should be moving your whole arm in a circle, then turn it off.

I've read that you

turn it on... make circles around the monitor and slowly move away... Then turn it off when your a good distance away.

But I don't have one... keep looking at ebay to find a deal... Only need it for 15 minutes.  Live near Cinci OH? and want to rent it for a bit?

Thanks for all the advice, after wasting an hour of my employers valuable time I came up with this site which is actually pretty good
http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam/crtfaq.htm#crtmdg

As far as borrowing the wand is concerned, I'd be happy to lend it to you but i'm in New Zealand which is on the oppoiste side of the world so postage might be a bit tricky.

Anyone in New Zealand (acukland) who needs to borrow it just drop me a line.

I'll pull it out and wave it around tonight (while saying abracadbra) and let you know how I go

We have one at work, though I've never had to use it. The site you linked seems like decent instructions from what I've heard, though one of the old timers at work was telling me he convinced a coworker to make sure the monitor was lined up with magnetic north or it wouldn't work.  >:D
