Title: Atari 360 wheel pic request
Post by: Minwah on January 05, 2005, 04:36:40 pm
Anyone have a pic of the gear side of an Atari 360 (Pole Position or Super Sprint etc.) wheel?

I'm having trouble keeping the grease from the gears off of the optic wheel for some reason...I did take it apart some months before I put it back together  ::)

Minwah,
I just finished mounting my modular pole position wheel.  I made a diagram before disassembling to make sure it was in the right order:

Here's a side view which shows most of the parts:

And another angle...my gears don't mesh perfectly because the bracked was badly bent when I received it.  However it works beautifully!

Minwah,

How much grease do you have ON the gears?
They shouldn't have enough on them to go clear out onto the optics.
They just need a tiny bit to keep the plastic from chewing itself up.

Or is your grease not sticky enough, and flying off the gears when you spin really fast?

Thanks a lot guys, I think I know what the problem is...see the pic...

I had problems getting the optics to work properly (in Windows the cursor would move back and forth while moving the wheel in one direction), so I removed the washer circled and replaced with a thinner one, so my optic wheel is nearer to the optic part circled - this seemed to cure the problem.  However this means the optic wheel is also very close to the large gear - I didn't see this as a problem but after a few weeks use I was shocked to see last night that the optic wheel's holes were *full* of grease!  I don't know why it even still worked!

NoOne:  I guess I did have too much grease on there anyway, so it is probably not a problem.  I seem to have put everything else together correctly.

Doc: I wonder why my optics don't work well without having the wheel close to the opposite site of the optics to you?  I do have the optics mounted the same way around.  Also, does your wheels' shaft have any slack in the bronze bearings?  Mine seems to have a bit of 'in/out' travel (probably just a bit of wear) but also some side to side 'give'.  Not too concerning, but it just clonks a bit in heated gameplay sometimes...

Minwah,
The only thing I can think of with respect to the optics is that the optic receptical is built on a curve, so perhaps the optics on yours are not aligned perfectly leaving some kind of blind spot.  I believe there are two optical pickups to provide direction feedback.

I have very little play in the bearings, but I think that has more to do with the fact that the bottom bracket was badly bent when I bought it than wear and tear.  I was able to pound it back into shape so it moves freely, but I'm not sure the alignment between the bearings is perfect.  As a result I may have inadvertently removed a lot of the play through slight misalignment.

I guess you could pound your bracket for a few minutes with a hammer to misalign it and remove the play (that's how I did it!!).  ;D

Cheers!

Could well be :)  Not terribly important really, just found it interesting.

Makes sense...

If in doubt, smack it eh! :)  Thinking about it it's possible mine is a little bent (mayexplain why I have play 'in and out' as well).  I have some spare bronze bearings from another broken wheel - I might try those and see if it makes any difference.  If not I might try to 'tweak' the bracket slightly ;)

Thanks again
