I just created my Harley avatar using the following process.
First, this is from an AVI which uses the (obsolete) IBM Ultimotion codec from back in the Win3.1+OS/2 days. I created a Win32 decoder for it back in 2003. Both available from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu
Then I used VirtualDub http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net to shrink it down to 80x60 then save the frames as individual TGA files.
Next I used an old, patched, version of Dave's Targa Animator http://all7.com/old_dta.zip to convert them to GIFs with a unified palette.
Finally, I used UnFREEz http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez to convert merge them into a single animated GIF.
Hmm, since it weighs in at over 800K, I may decrease the frame rate.
