Title: The High Life updated 1/16
Post by: mozzer on January 01, 2005, 09:48:18 pm
More pics here  http://everythingarcade.blogspot.com/

Finally started my cab today. It went alot smoother then I expected.

Nothing fancy, 2 player layout, 19 or 21 inch computer monitor.

I decided to name it The High Life because it's my favorite beer and it's going next to my newly built 3 sided bar!

You did all that in 1 day?  You don't have kids, do you!   :)

Nice work.  I look forward to seeing more pics.

Nice generic design, it is like every classic cab, and none of them, all at the same time. Looks most like Defender and Centipede though.

I didn't use any plans. Just scetched it on the MDF. I wanted to recess a part of the front but the coindoor takes up so much room.

Hopefully I can make it less generic with my marquee and CPO. I like the look of the classic cabs, this one will sit next to my elevator action and hopefully a playchoice 10....

Is that cab 8 feet tall?

Sorry, I couldn't resist  ;D

I'm curious though, is the cab up on a table or platform of some sort?

Drop ceiling sits at 6' 5". Cab is 6' 2".

I guess they never heard of running the plumbing through the floor joists back in 1951  ???

I read that "generic" as endearment, not a put down. I'm also partial to the 80's style cabs, and I think this one looks great. I think the one area I would have deviated from the "classic" lines would have been to make the control area just a bit deeper for a 3" trackball and twin sticks. If you're just a cab with specific controls for key games, I guess that wouldn't matter.
Nice work!  :D

Remind me not to come over your house, at least not to play in the basement that is...  Yea, I'm 3" taller than your ceiling!  :P

Was thinking about this for the marquee.

What do you think?

You've got the name, why not just take the top label (the one around the upper part of the neck on a bottle) and vectorize that for the label?  Not having had one of those in quite a while, I can't remember what that label looks like, but why not stick with the name and theme it all out like that?

White or red T-molding, gold-ish color to the cab, etc?

Mebbe make the "main" label your sideart, stretched to fit.

Even though it is the Champaigne of Beers, I don't want my cab to endorse Miller.

I really like the saying. The high life is when everything is perfect, bliss. It's like Arcade Paradise,

I'm afraid if I try to make it look like the logo it will take away from the arcade feel.......

You don't have to lose ALL of the ceiling space at the level of the pipes, just the space around the pipes... just enclose them with wood or something and make the ceiling max height.  You could get it all the way IN the joists if you do it right (and it's easy).

The ceiling was already finished and in good shape. If I had done the job or if we were planing on staying in this house I would have done things different. But it works for now. We're planning on building a new house in 2 years.

Here is a new marquee that my wife just did. Kind of a retro vegas feel.  ;D

I think your wife has a future in marquee design!  Nothing personal, yours is good but I like hers better!  It has more of an arcade appeal in my opinion.  Experiment w/different colors all around, you can really create an impact by switching colors here & there.  Nothing wrong with whatcha got, just a suggestion.

I didn't do my marquee or sideart (definately next time!), but I did do the bezel & CP design.  I tried to make sure all the artwork 'worked' together.  Have you considered your other artwork when creating your marquee?

Nice cabinet design.  Looking good!

Very nice!

I like your wife's design, but if your last name's not 15+ letters long it might be fun to put it in place of "Miller" in an otherwise Miller High Life type marquee.  Your name might look cool with the red triangular underline!

Thought I'd give an update on my status.

My wife finished deisigning the marquee and cpo and we took the files to our good ole local kinkos on Thursday.  They gave me a quote of $27 for both pieces, CPO on vinyl and marquee on backlit.

Went to pick them up on Friday. Mistake #1. They printed the marquee on vinyl instead of backlit. CPO was completly scratched. Said they would redo them.

My wife picked them up on Saturday and brought them home. I unrolled them and they looked sweet. Marquee was on backlit and cpo was scratchless. Went downstairs to test fit them. Mistake #2. Marquee was 1" short in length and CPO was 2" short in length and .5" short in width.

Gave them a quick call and asked them to read me back the measurements we gave them. Right on, both of them were supposed to be 25.5" in length. Told her they screwed up AGAIN and asked how they were going to make things right?

She said they erased the files off of their computer and we'd have to bring the disc back in. I told her they were going to refund our money and reprint the job for free. I'm kind of hesitant of going back but if I get it for free and it looks good then it'll be worth it...

She's almost done! Just need my tinted glass and a 21" monitor!

Artwork turned out great after we finally took care of our Kinkos nightmare...

If you are going to name it after a beer, then at least get an authentic Tapper control!  Though that would have Bud on it..
