Title: New picture tubes for tube swaps
Post by: Ken Layton on December 31, 2004, 01:16:00 am
Found some brand new replacement picture tubes for cheap prices on ebay. These would be perfect for tube swaps. The 25" should fit Wells-Gardner 25k7191 series and the 19" should fit Wells 4600, 4900 and other 19" monitors with the 10 pin socket.

Item # 6142437899 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6142437899) is an RCA A63AFW tube (25",10 pin, B&K adapter # CR23). Buy it now for $59.95, seller is "kfl1974" and has 855 of these available. Located in Bicknell, Indiana

Item # 6142437425 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6142437425) is an RCA A48AAB tube (19", 10 pin, B&K adapter # CR23). Buy it now for $45.00. Same seller as above and has 240 of these available.

Would the A63AFW match pretty well to my chassis with a A63ABG25X tube?

How difficult is a tube swap?  I gather the yoke has to be swapped, and then the convergence/purity/etc reset?  (Which I've never done, mind you  :o )

Or, for another $120, is the CGA/EGA "kit" (from the same seller) not a bad deal?

TIA!

Tube swaps always involve lots of time since you need to swap the yoke and purity rings.

You can visit these tube swap links:

Thanks for the links.

How close of a match is A63AFW to A63ABG25X?  (Is there a link that has this kind of information?

OK, maybe I've "stumped the band"  ;D, let me ask a different way.

I have a 25K5515 (which is the 25" version of the 4900), running mysteriously at 15KHz  ???  Anyways...I'm quite familiar with this board having fixed it (with Ken's help of course  8)), but the tube is pretty worn out.

Would the A63AFW work with this board?

(I am concerned by a section I found on the Randy Fromm site (discussing in detail a tube swap) that says at the end:

"Following these procedures and with practice, you'll achieve the best purity and convergence possible. It will probably be pathetic. I have little success with this and don't recommend it to anyone. Better to keep the chassis as a spare, throw away the bad CRT and frame, and purchase a new monitor. "

lol, not confidence inspiring

The seller emailed me back that the A63AFW is CGA/Ega compatible so it should work perfectly with your chassis!  ;D

Cool Ken, thanks!

Now, "should I do it" is the question.

Perhaps if the crowd starts chanting my name, I will get inspired  ;D

Ken,

Can I assume that when you say compatible with the 7191, you mean also the 7131? :)

Hmm, auction has ended, no sales were made.

I guess he should drop the price a little.

I didn't get one because it looks like a flat screen to me.

Later,

I didn't get one because I'm too scared to take my one (working, but some screen burn and not very bright) montitor apart in order to make two completely non-working ones  :o

A lower price MIGHT push me over the edge however
