I am in the process of building a mame cocktail table and having a very difficult time putting games into cocktail mode. in particular arkanoid and galaga 88. In arkanoid, when I go to the dip switches and change the flip to yes, the screen starts out upside down but never flips. On galaga 88 there is no dip switch setting for the cabinet type. What am I doing wrong here. mame.net shows that these games support cocktail mode if i am reading the list right and really want to get them to work as they are the primary games I will play on the cocktail table. Thanks for any help.

Neither of those games has a cocktil mode. I think the setting you are looking at in both arkanoid and at mame.net is 'flip screen' This has nothing to do with cocktail mode.
The bootleg version of arkanoid does support cocktail mode. You're out of luck with galaga88 AFAIK.

Galaga 88 has cocktail mode:
in dip switches set service mode to on
reset game
set type to "A" in service area (A is cocktail, B is upright with 2 sets of controls and C is upright with one set of controls)
set dip switch back to service mode off
Enjoy

whammoed, Thanks A new game for my cocktail as well :)
I will have to look at service mode more often!

Strange ??? Qix had a cocktail table. I know it did. I once put a roll of quarters into an afternoons play.

Excellent!. Galaga88 is one of the primary reasons for me to build a cocktail table. Thanks a million

I noticed with the Catalyst drivers that you can assign hot keys to change the monitor rotation. I wonder if you could assign a hot key to a button that would rotate the monitor 180 degrees while in play to create a virtual cocktail mode for games that dont have the mode?

OK, I'm dumb. I tried this and can't find wher to set the type to A--I can set service mode on, but after resetting, I cannot find anywhere to set the type. Can someone please explain??
Thanks.

OK, feeling really dumb right now. Do service mode "on"--do reset game--screen cycles back to start--then I go through all the items and can't find "game options" anywhere. Where do I find them?
Sorry for being dense this morning. . . .

This is Galaga 88, right?
When the game is playing, pressing F2 (for Service Mode) brings me straight to the screen below.

Yep, it's Galaga 88.

Yep, it's set to F2. The game just won't respond to it when I press it.

The problem is that I hit F3 and I don't get into the service area. For some reason I can't get there. Any ideas?

You might just try selecting return to game after you reset then you see the service mode.

Nope, even returning to the game doesn't bring it up. This is what I do. 1 Launch mamewah.
2 Select Galaga 88
3 Launch Galaga 88
4 Hit "Tab" to bring up controls
5 Go to dipsticks and select service mode--turn that "on"
6 Reset game
No service mode.
I can try reseting with the menu up or waiting until I'm back at the game and it doesn't make any difference--what am I doing wrong?
-
When you hit reset "the game" should turn into the service mode. Selecting return to game should close the config windown and then you should be able to select A. I have 3 versions of Gallaga 88 and have done it to two with no problems.

Unfortunately, it doesn't bring up service mode. It just resets the game to the beginning. I'll try my other versions of gagaga 88 to see if it works with them.
-
OK, figured out the problem.

It works in 0.77 if you need a version older than 0.85. The steps I used were:
F2
F3
Arrow down to "TYPE" and set to "A"
F2

It works in 59 cause I used 59 then. It probably work way more since it was supported.
