hi there, im trying to design myself a control layout for a 4 player console. i need suggestions as of what all to include.
so far i figure i will need:
4 joysticks
6 buttons per player
1-4 player start buttons
2 pause buttons on either side of the console top
1 button mounted on top of the cab to turn everything on/off
1 trackball
also, do i connect a trackball in the same manner as i would the sticks and buttons; to the ipac, or do i need to buy an optipac too?
-
You need an opti-pac or a mouse-hack for the trackball, and as for players 3 and 4 I keep hearing you don't need more than 3 or 4 buttons, cuz there are no 4 player fighting games.
-
isnt marvel vs capcom 4 player fighting, i think tekken tag is too
actually i may be wrong
-
4 joysticks- Yes, its a 4 player panel
6 buttons per player - 6 buttons for P1 & P2, 4 buttons for P3 & P4
1-4 player start buttons - Yep
2 pause buttons on either side of the console top - Not really needed
1 button mounted on top of the cab to turn everything on/off - Sure
1 trackball - Yes
You may want to add 4 coin buttons for each player too.
Buttons and joysticks require a Keyboard Encoder to hook up (Example: IPAC/4)
Trackball requires a Opti-pac or a mouse hack will do.
Hope this helps

thanks for your replys, could you give me a link to some info on the mouse hack?
i saw on one persons layout, they had a few "admin buttons"...any idea what they might be?
and lastly, how many spinners should i have, would you think?
-
Yes Tekken Tag is 4 player,
not sure about MvsC2 for (which system)? but it's possible

If you spend 5 mins using the search feature on this site, then you'll find the answers.
Mouse hack - http://www.oscarcontrols.com/DPDTswitch.shtml
Admin buttons - ESC, Pause, 0 - K buttons ;D
1 spinner would be fine.

I would add two pinball buttons (left/right flippers) on the side on the control panel as well as adding individual CoinUp buttons for player1->4.
I have two pause buttons and they come in handy so either player on each side of the board can hit the pause button easily without reaching too far across a 4-player control panel.
My admin buttons include Tab, Tilda, Esc, Enter, Reset
PS: I do not believe you need 'O' and 'K' buttons since moving the joystick of player1 right, then left (or is it the other way around??) will perform the 'O'+'K' function as disired.
You can check out my 4-player control panel layout at my site:

Good Luck...

Thats a nice PS2 review of Tekken Tag. As the arcade version is 2 players only.

Ok?
Whats the arcade version have to do with it?
The PS2/console version is 4 player

Thank you for proving my point... for a mame machine, you only need 4 buttons max for P3 & P4.
