Title: Exiting emulator to frontend?
Post by: JonnyBoy on December 26, 2004, 12:56:48 pm
Okay, well, I am making my own cabinet etc. etc. and I ran into a problem. Well, I am using a hotrod for my control panel, mostly because it is a price issue. I came across the fact that to exit an emulator to go back to the front end, I need to be able to set the key that allows me to exit on the fly. The problem is, I can't seem to find an emulator that lets me set the exit key for Genesis, anybody have any ideas on this one? Thanks a lot!

Most emulators don't allow the 'exit key' to be set unfortunately.  I'd recommend you add an Escape button to your HotRod - most emulators which can use an exit key will use Escape.  See: http://mamewah.mameworld.net/hotrodmod.html

BTW Fusion can use Escape to quit by default when using the -fullscreen switch, or GensFE from www.screenshotarchive.com .

Oh...geee. Well, um, I'm an electrical idiot. There are no other alternatives to this?

The generally accepted practice of a "cabinet friendly" exit method is using the ESC key. Almost every good emulator functions this way. For the few that don't there are generally hacked versions that do. You could maybe hide a pushbutton on top of the cabinet (that's where mine is) and use some sort of keyboard hack to exit the emulator and return to the front end. I have never done the keyboard hack but I know there are a few sites that show how it's done. I'd bet there one on this site somewhere. I think it only costs a couple of bucks.

My HotRod SE has player 2 start+ right pinball button mapped to ESC. If you have an SE, you may have this button combination set already, or you may be able to download something from Hanaho to allow you to set it.
